I know everyone is sharing the Oyster problem stories, so I wanted to do the same.
I have heard that we can now use Oyster PAYG on the FGW between Ealing and Padd. I often use this service, but usually have to buy a paper ticket, so this was good news to me. Yesterday I decided to try it out using Oyster. This is what happened:
I topped up my One pulse Oyster with £5
I touched in at Ealing Bdy at approx 1610, there was a train there straight away so I was at Paddington at about 1621. I went straight to the Hammersmith and City Line. Because you do not need to go out of the barriers to get to the H&C after arriving on FGW, I touched my Oyster "out" on the validation machine on the H&C line area. It showed Exit.
I then travelled to St Pancras, where I was just going to collect some tickets. This didn't take me long and I was soon back on the Underground, a circle line train arrived first so I took this to Paddington.
I exited the LUL side, and walked to NR, the next train was the 1655 Greenford train from Platform 14.
I touched in with my Oyster Barclays card at about 1650, I got to Ealing Broadway and touched out, the journey took about 15-20 mins (from Touching in at Padd to touching out at Ealing).
Then I checked on the touch screen machine how much the journey cost me. I was very confused when it showed the following (all dated Sat 17th):
1704: - Ealing Broadway £4.00
1647: Ealing Broadway - Unknown £4.00
1610: Ealing Broadway - Paddington £0.00
Balance: -£3.00
So it appears that my first journey (Ealing to Padd) was free ?
The next, for some reason was a phantom journey that I never made, from Ealing Bdy to Unknown.... go figure that one, as apparently I started that journey at 1647, which was approx when I touched in at Paddington to return back to Ealing. So it would have been impossible for me to touch in at Ealing at 1647!
Then the third journey, I figure was when I went from Paddington to Ealing Bdy, but for some reason it did not register me touching in at Paddington.. I don't know why as I certainly did touch in.. and charged me £4
Overall I got charged £8 for a return from Ealing to Paddington..
I rang the Oyster help-line today, they said I had probably been charged the wrong fare but don't know why. They wanted to refund the £4, which I was over-charged by, to my Oyster card. But this would mean I have to touch in, and travel, to collect the refund. I told them I don't plan on making any Oyster PAYG journeys in the future and would be sticking to paper tickets after this experience, so they agreed to send me a cheque.
Anyone know why I had such a complication... for 2 'simple' journeys, when I did everything correctly ?
Anyway even with the refund it still cost £4 for the Journey, it would have been £2.50 for a paper CDR ticket
