I will probably be shot down for this but, when we approach having that number of lines crossing, I believe the case becomes justified for going back to first principles and re-evaluating how they're depicted from scratch. It all looks far too congested, and whatever choice of colours are used doesn't really change that fact.
I'm used to poring over fine details but just looking at that grab above sends my eyes in a spin. What would the poor rich tourists make of it all?
The first things I would suggest would be:
1. Exploding the central section even more than it is at present 2. Making ALL lines thinner (like the DLR in-car maps) 3. Displaying station names for non LU services (not just Crossrail but Overground, DLR and Tramlink aswell) in a smaller type with smaller tickmarks and having the lines 'dip-under' the LU ones - i.e. have a noticable border around them where they come into contact with TfL lines. 4. Having, next to the Tube Map, specific ones for DLR, Crossrail and Tramlink which reverse rule 3 and show the Underground lines in a pale watermarked version of themselves.
