Following the KX fire of 1987 it is my understanding that smoking was banned across the underground network including on stations (surface included).
I still see people lighting up from time to time and have ,even in the past 6 months, have approached 2 characters from smoking cannabis whilst on a train I was about to alight from @ Hornchurch (other people already on the train were pretending not to notice ) - I was prepared to go to the extent of pressing the emergency button to force the issue, which would have involved the driver and/or stationstaff, however fortunately when I forced the issue they conceeded putting them their roll-ups out (probaby only to light up again once I had got off).
Whilst I am only a 'customer' of LU (not staff) are drivers/station staff aware that this is still an intermittant issue (everyone seems to have forgotten KX)?
Also what should customers do when they witness smoking:
1) Report it to LU staff (perhaps the official way that this issue should be dealt with) in the knowledge that the individual(s) concerned will probably no longer be in the same location - RENDERING THIS PROCESS POINTLESS
2) Approach offenders advising them politely but firmly to put out their cigarette - WHAT ACTION SHOULD CUSTOMERS TAKE IF INDIVIDUALS REFUSE OR BECOME ABUSIVE?
3) Just ignore the situation allowing offenders to continue puting not only our health at risk, but also other passengers safety in jeopardy)
I understand that were I to have blocked the closing door or pressed the emergency button, I would have caused a delay to other passengers. However I feel that a delay is a miniscule price to pay for the potential alternative!
I'd appreciate any personal views from LU staff and/or customers as well as any information as regards LU policy regarding this issue
