They must have superglued that briefcase to the floor. From what I remember about the W&C the ride was that rough that it was nigh on impossible to stand up for the trip. That briefcase would have fallen over before the train was out of the station!

This involved walking (in theory) from Waterloo to Bank and back inspecting the fire equipment and making sure the pump in the sump area worked, and testing the phones Interesting.....never knew drivers carried out these tasks! Did main line drivers carry out this sort of thing on any other routes?

No, not that I know of. every other main line tunnel would have been in use 24/7.
The W&C guards had to walk the tunnel too.
There was one frightening episode one Saturday when walking the tunnel with an inspector who insisted we went through to Bank, it must have been just after they installed the speed control train stops.
Walking back "wrong road" to Waterloo, just approaching the sump, there was an ominous rumbling of a train approaching! The juice was off and sometimes you could hear tube trains running close by, but this was different. A definite rumbling in OUR tunnel!! AArgh. RUN. To the nearest cross-passage and dive for safety, just as the pway gang rumbled past with a little 4 wheel trolley!! Luckily they were pushing it rather slowly, so no harm caused, but it was rather worrying at the time.
