Whilst traipsing through the Bakerloo platforms at Waterloo a while ago I noticed a wooden door bearing an enamelled plate with the letters "WATERLOO IMR 'BR-BS'". Upon seeing this door I was reminded of BAET's statement that the very last Westinghouse V frame installed on LUL was at Waterloo in 1991.
Now for the 64 thousand pound question: why is the IMR for two controlled sites positioned at a station that is not part of either site?

Well when a new IMR is built you have to find a space for it. As there was no space at Elephant & Castle or Lambeth North for the IMR it was built at Waterloo ( I think it is in a old lift shaft).

Ah, that makes sense.
Is that why BAET once said that Heathrow IMR (WY) is actually at Hatton Cross (WW)?

Ah, that makes sense. Is that why BAET once said that Heathrow IMR (WY) is actually at Hatton Cross (WW)? I didn't say that. Waterloo IMR was placed where it is at the request of the client i.e. the operators. At the time Waterloo was decided as the most convenient place in case the frame needed to be worked manually. Other sites considered included London Road Depot, but the problem of access was a prohibitive factor.

( I think it is in a old lift shaft). It isn't. The access is via a disused lift shaft however.

Ah, that makes sense. Is that why BAET once said that Heathrow IMR (WY) is actually at Hatton Cross (WW)? I didn't say that. Naturally, after saying that you did, I realized that you didn't (you said it on a forum long dead). But I do remember you stating that the IMR at one of those stations was in an unusual (to me) location. I hate it when I can't remember stuff Waterloo IMR was placed where it is at the request of the client i.e. the operators. At the time Waterloo was decided as the most convenient place in case the frame needed to be worked manually. Other sites considered included London Road Depot, but the problem of access was a prohibitive factor. Well, it is certainly easy to access - the door opens right out into one of the cross-passages of the Bakerloo platforms.

That door labelled IMR isn't the actual door - you have to go through three more before you can even see the IMR.
