Does anyone ever recall if any 501 ever had to push a 38TS with the bar [is that what the coupling device was?] kept in one cab ...I assume that there was a similar one in 72TS? I read that for obvious reasons the other way round so to speak was not possible.

Dunno, but Q8 told us of a situation where an R stock on the District had to push out a BR train. Since the couplers didn't match they did the job by sandwiching the 'cab plank' between the units and just pushing - VERY carefully!
