...like the ones you see near schools for example. Are they there to let picc drivers know when they should stop @ TG? If not...?

Yes, that's exactly what they're there for, to act as a reminder to stop at TG. They don't often seem to work though. I'm not sure who's supposed to switch them on though. Are they controlled from the station, are they on a timeswitch or activated from Earls Court? Anybody know?

So THAT's what those things are for!
I seem them all the time and noted that they looked quite a lot like crossing lights, but never twigged on their purpose.
I suspect that it's switched on via a panel in the SS office on the WB island at TG; if they were controlled via the IMR, I'd be surprised.

I did hear from a Picadilly Line T/O when they were installed that they ran off a domestic time switch.

They should work automatically, But have not worked for ages now! I shall find out some more information about them!

they are actually wired to a central heating timer in the power room (for the IMR) at turnham green and rather then getting a simple thing to programme its more complicated then a nasa space shuttle

wouldn't it be easier to employ the same system that they use at holborn and st pauls on the central whereby drivers are told if chancery lane is open or not by means of simple hand-worked signs that could be placed at hammersmith/acton

It might be, but TG is normally closed to Picc trains whereas Chancery Lane is normally open, drivers are more likely IMHO to forget to stop at a station that is normally closed than forget to stop at a station that is normally open, if you know what I mean. Plus Acton or Hammersmith to Turnham Green is a long way to forget something...

My issue would probably be with the professionalism of the drivers - if they're doing their job to what I would consider to be an acceptable standard, they should know full well where they're supposed to stop and when. Mind, this is the Picc we're talking about......

Mind, this is the Picc we're talking about...... Well EXCUSE ME for being an 'unprofessional' driver then, as I went through Turnham Green a total of 3 times (at 55 mph when booked to stop) in the 11 years I drove on the Picc!! Seriously though, it's very easy to forget on the odd occasion when driving though non-stop is the norm. Remembering NOT to stop at a station that's sometimes closed (like Cannon Street) is a lot easier than remembering TO stop at Turnham Green once in a while, believe me. There are no passengers at a closed station, which sort of gives you a clue! Anyway.... leave the dark-blue railway alone Dave, or I won't get you a pint next time!!! ;D

Hey, this is starting to feel like the canteen at Acton Town in the old days again! District blokes to the right and Picc blokes to the centre-left as you went in. Plenty of banter and p*ss-taking between the two lines.... which seems to have survived to this day!! ;D
