Hey everyone - I noticed a wierd thing the other day waiting for the Greenford train on platform 14 at Paddington. Over on the Hammersmith and City Line, just as it comes out of the tunnel from Edgware road there is a tunnel in the wall on the right that is no longer connected by track (although there are some track remnants leading into the tunnel) I wondered if anyone knew what in the heck this tunnel was for. I don't see any spurs or anything that used to be there on any old maps and the way the tunnel points doesn't go towards any track that I know of.

It was I believe a shunting spur for the steam locos that operated when the line first opened with Paddington as the western terminus.

hmmm interesting. I wonder how far back the tunnel goes. If I wasn't in the country on a visa and afraid of being deported if arrested I would be tempted to check it out one night after the last train!!

It was also a loco spur to change from steam to electric on GWR through trains (e.g. Windsor/Uxbridge Vine Street to the City), which ended at the beginning of WW2.

Hey everyone - I noticed a wierd thing the other day waiting for the Greenford train Does that mean trains travel direct between Paddington and Greenford? I thought the main line service at Greenford only went as far as Ealing Broadway.

It did, until 20 years ago.
A through Greenford to Paddington service started on May 16th, 1988.

They used to reverse just east of Ealing Broadway, can't remember if it was a siding or main line shunt, but used to see it when I was on the Central Line.

Until a major track reorganisation in the late 70's (I think), westbound H&C trains used to be routed via Platform 13. Platforms 14 and 15 were local terminating/departing platforms. Obviously this caused lots of conflicting movements, so the arrangement was tidied up with H&C using 15/16 and GW on 13/14

A siding between the Down Relief and Up Main - I have a photo in a book somewhere. It was colloquially known as the 'car park'.

So the up Greenford's were terminated to cut congestion at Paddington? Was it something more sinister, like downgrading it, then closing it? A lot of the WR branches were similarly treated.
