Know from my rides on the Northern in the past, you could sometimes pick the Jubbly up around Waterloo and London Bridge. Also, found a list of the radio frequencies for the train radio. I asked in the depot and was told that if you have a suitable transceiver, you can hear the convo's....

I asked in the depot and was told that if you have a suitable transceiver, you can hear the convo's.... I know drivers that bring scanners with them to enable them to hear the current radio system clearer. Yellowsignal is spot on. Connect is TETRA based and completely secure. The caller groups haven't yet been fully decided for us. (or at least no one is spilling the beans yet) Once the bugs have been ironed out, and from speaking to other people who operate similar systems, connect should be a very good tool for us. Added bonus which I forgot to mention, is that the controller will be able tell what train is where throughout the line, because as a train travels from cell to cell, the dispatcher screen will give the controller the train, car and driver ID in each cell.

will connect allow drivers to talk to each other in exceptional circumstances. Such as when a train needs to be pushed out, the driver of the pushing train can keep constant talk with the driver of the front train.

Indeed this will possible - though it won't be limited to exceptional circumstances as such; it's a feature that can be used at any time. Drivers will even be able to talk to station staff (and vice versa). I suspect though, management would rather we concentrate on our core job of actually driving the train ;D

You will be able to talk to your DMT and also signal operators. It will make our jobs much easier - especially if you just want to tell a driver somethign trivial, save him or her having to climb out down to the SPT. I cant wait to use it!

If you care to look at page 2 of this thread, you'll find your Baker Street colleague has put up some good reasons for signallers not liking it! ;D ;D

That's because his Baker Street colleague controls a fair few more trains at any one time.
If there is the ability for all this cross-talk between drivers, station staff, DMTs and signallers, can you begin to wonder just how congested the system will get.
Right at this moment in time, a quick count reveals there are 42 Sub-Surface Lines trains within our control area. There has been a little bit of congestion throughout the morning but nothing serious. I have answered an ordinary telephone call almost every minute. Imagine then also receiving the equivalent of a telephone call from each train whenever they are held at a signal for a few seconds.
We are not getting an increase in staff to cope with this additional workload. How does management suggest we keep our attention fixed to our real jobs (i.e. keeping trains moving to avoid the calls) if we are to be bombarded by additional call-handling work.
Then, as has already been suggested, the network will be so easy to use that it won't take too long before the silly questions begin to flood in. People won't think twice to make that call if there's a handset near them and they know it's a direct line to anyone.

Such as when a train needs to be pushed out, the driver of the pushing train can keep constant talk with the driver of the front train. The system will allow this (assuming this function hasn't been disabled to t/op's). Better still 2 handsets can be patched in to each other by the controller so we will in effect have a secure 2 way radio to the assisting driver.

These new options just require some discipline from all users.
