When I was photographing at Chesham station on Saturday I saw what looks to be a two-aspect signal head mounted at ground level between the signal box and track - separated from the latter by a cable run. Neither aspect was lit. Is there a reason for this? Click for larger photos

I've spent a little bit of time looking on the net for information, but all I've found out is that it was probably there in December last year and definately there in February this year. It was not there in 1986.

I've spent a little bit of time looking on the net for information, but all I've found out is that it was probably there in December last year and definately there in February this year. It was not there in 1986. I spoke to a friend of mine who used to be a supervisor at Chesham, and he said its been there for at least ten years. When the cabin closed there was a great plan to have it so that school children could have a look round and learn about how signalling works, thus they installed the signal there so they could have a good look at it. The signal itself used to be the station starting signal at Chesham, which platform im not sure...... Hope That helps

That does really help, thanks.
What happened to the plans - it sounds like a very good idea?

What happened to the plans - it sounds like a very good idea? As with everything there is always a glitch! I suspect it was something along the lines of too close to the track, cant have children that close blah blah blah, you can imagine the rest!

Put up a chicken-wire fence (like that in the background) alongside the cable run "fence" and replace the ballast with something easier to walk on and I'd have thought it would be OK. You get far closer to the track on platforms (where you are more likely to fall onto the track) and there is probably a public walkway/footpath adjacent to the railway somewhere on the system (although I can't bring anywhere to mind) that they don't fret about...
