It was a video of how the Metropolitan spread into rural areas in the 1920's and 30's and London followed it...
I remember seeing it about 15 years ago and can only really remember the bit where someone tried to build an Eiffel Tower in the land that became Wembley Stadium...

Yes I've seen that. It went up through Harrow, Pinner, Northwood, and onwards out into the countryside of Herts and Bucks.... ignoring the Uxbridge branch completely!

There is also a novel titled "Metroland", by Julian Barnes. The book is a kind of coming-of-age story about a school boy growing up in the fities, sixties and early seventies, and the things that happens in his life. While not explicitly about the Metropolitan line, it does figure quite a lot in his journeys and thoughts. As well as Paris, literary ambitions, dinosaurs, anexiety and girls. It's quite good!

There was also an episode of a series a while back on Discovery Home & Leisure, entitled "Metroland." It was in the series "Trainspotting" and it featured the London Underground. (Those familiar with this, grit your teeth again) It included a 45 second (yes just 45 seconds - the other 3 minutes went to the cutting room floor) slot with a very handsome chap operating the Signalling Control Centre at Baker Street ;D

I had been under the impression that it was you that was featured in that programme, but from your description it was obviously someone else ;D

They made the novel into a film aswell. There are lots of books that would make interesting films. How about 'Rails Through The Clay - The Movie'? The only problem is, by the time the movie industry had adjusted it for the box office, it would probably be a love story starring Johnny Depp as Charles Tyson Yerkes

Some wonderfull Betjeman poetry in "Metroland" ...
"Over the points by electrical traction.....
till we come to ths suburb thats thought to be commonplace"
Then a burst of the song "Neasden" .....
Interesting now for the high speed line trip - 4 car A stock running around and all over blue DMUs Some great old black and white film circa 1910.
Gem .
