Metronet are holding a competition to name one of these class 66s... How about Bridgebreaker? I'd love to know what the effect of a class 66 on some of the met line bridges will be, considering one of the reasons Steam on the Met was culled was because the bridges weren't quite to main line locos passing over at full speed...

Exactly! I keep waiting for someone to cotton onto the fact that these earthworks are not certified for NR mainline locomotives of any axleloading, and that despite their design it may cost Metronet a LOT of GBP to make them safe for such.

I think the lack of tripcock fitment to the GBRf 66s is stupid. It's not like fitting tripcocks would make them unusable on NR metals, as there is precedent for such already... I Thought that Tripcocks were mandatory fittment for any NR Rolling Stock running over the LU??? The Chiltern Line Springs to mind, immidiately. Cheers, ~ Matloughe

It would be if they were running among normal traffic, but they are only going to be used in a possession and their movements will not be controlled by the normal signals.

Err - what about getting to the possession itself?

Perhaps two possessions will be taken - one the actual BTR and the other from the LU/NR boundary to the BTR?
The first possession would be all weekend as is now, and the second taken on the friday night and sunday night to get the train to and from the worksite?

Ballasted Track Replacement.
Formerly known as Enhanced Track Replacement (ETR), before that the Corporate Track Alliance Programme (CTAP) and before that the Corporate Rail Alliance Programme (rubbish).
Strange how the original name didn't catch on??

BTR is an ETR on the cheap.

The loading standard for design and assessment of structures carrying mainline stock is RU Loading (Railways Universal). LT developed its own standard RL Loading to reflect the lower axle weights of battery locomotives. Class 66 Loco axle loading is slightly above the RL standard though speed will be restricted. All good in theory. I've seen battery locos pass bridges at line speed during traffic hours. It would be interesting to see what the effect is on the various earth retaining structures are though. RU standard applies to Met line north of Neasden (excluding Chesham branch). RL applies to the remainder of the LU network except for the Wimbledon branch. Passenger Tube stock is about 50% of RL.

Friday night engineering hours are cancelled and the possession takes over at the end of traffic hours. Sunday night engineering hours don't start until the last train in the possession passes through which might not even happen until the start of traffic on monday morning. Engineering hours are also cancelled during the week in the run up to the weekend where engineering trains move to their starting positions. As a result all other work on the line cannot take place. I like to see how the 66 will get to Ricky and back travelling at 15mph.

Apart from Amersham, Harrow is to be be an access point. Reference was made in RAIL about negotiations continuing about Upminster and usage of the Romford line. The other access mentioned is Gunnersbury. It's the signalling problem on the R-U line that seems to be holding up the Upminster connection.
I believe that apart from the Class 20s the last time that any serious thought was given to BR locomotives accessing via Harrow was the trial of a Class 25 that got as far as Uxbridge. LT as it then was decided BR wanted too much for what were knackered locos.

The Loco was named 'Harry Beck' and had a tube map plaque next to the name plate. Now that is a nice touch

Looking at the latest edition of Metronet Matters, there's a loco named after politician Gywneth Dunwoody and another called "Pathfinder".
