For those too young to remember the late 1940s there's an excellent film on Tuesday 13th at 13.25 on Channel 4. The Blue LampPaddington Green nick at that time was very different from that of today.

The cops were different then, too. For a start, they took pride in the fact that they did not carry guns.

Most coppers in the UK still prefer not to carry firearms on a regular basis.
I recently heard of a case where a Met copper had an New York police officer working with him for a few days. The American said that whilst on the beat and afterwards, even in the pub, he had never felt so nervous in his life because he did have his gun with him.
Let's hope we never get into that situation.

We're nearly there - Essex Police are soon going to be issuing ALL officers with a toned down version of the taser stun gun. These will be carried as standard issue.

I can give an example of an exchange in the opposite direction. A friend of mine is in the Met - at the time of this he was am ordinary PC. He went to the USA on an exchange plan of some sort - IIRC to Washington DC. The US officers he encountered were incredulous that our police don't routinely carry firearms. One said to him 'so, OK - you shout 'Stop, Police' to a fleeing felon and the person you're chasing doesn't stop. What do you do then? Shout 'Stop, or I'll shout Stop again!' I always thought that amusing.

That film is just fantastic (apart from the bit where Geo. Dixon gets shot). The commentry at the start of the film is spot on to
