What is needed is somehow to design a seat that is comfortably padded during the day but becomes wipe cleanable plastic after say 11pm (and preferably is still comfortable).
I haven't worked out how to achieve this yet though :/

A concept with the space train was to have seats that automatically flipped down at 10am, and flip up again at 4pm...
I hope the device that flipped the seats had the facility thought of that would detect if someone was sat on it, or standing nearby...

A way to do that would be to provide a button in each carriage for the T/op to press as they walked through the train while changing ends - checking that nobody is sitting on/in the way of the seats. Unfortunately most end of journey turnarounds are done in the platform, and certainly at some termini people start entering the carriage as soon as the flow of people leaving subsides.

I haven't worked out how to achieve this yet though :/ That ain't workable. However, how about a comfy padded seat with a semi-plasticie covering that is easy to wipe? It's worked before! (in Singapore Bus Services' buses)

I suppose that even wrapping a nice comfy padded seat in a cling-film type covering (although obviously something stronger than cling film) would do the trick. Wouldn't be pleasant sitting on them wearing shorts in hot weather though I wouldn't have thought :/

What about having all the seats on a pivot, so sets that come out at night could be flipped over in the depot?

I got a bit peeved when they replaced the seats on the D stock after refurbishment. How is one meant to sleep on his way home from a night shift if the seat is uncomforable?

I was on the Central line the other week-the seats on the 92s are dreadful and sunken. My favourate seats are the A60/72ts seats!

People actually use seats? I can't remember the last time I sat on a train! Probably a knock-on from using The Picc on match days!

I noticed today that the seats appeared more padded, does anyone know if they're replacing the cushions on the 92TS?

The cushions on the 1996TS (Jubilee Line ;D) are in a good state!
As for the 1992TS on the Central, I haven't really noticed any improvements. These seats needed to be replaced 5 years ago.

The 92TS seats are in an disgraceful condition - as is the rest of the train! Was sitting in a 95 stock the other day, and they still look like they did when new 10 years ago. The 92 stock, 15 years old, looks tatty and unloved. But as I said before, with the eyes of the world on Stratford in 2012, they will be sorted out soon.

There's to be some cab improvements after feedback from the drivers has been reviewed, but as far as the interiors are concerned I've heard nothing that is planned, but then again they look tatty because of the "World Class" way they've been treated - Armrests kicked out, glass etching, paint stripper tagging, graffiti, used as a mobile rubbish dump, seats vomited on etc. Even the extinguishers had to be removed because they were being hurled through the windows after being let off. So what's the point of throwing good money after bad...?....A shame really because the decent passengers deserve something better. I'd think at best all they'll get is some new covers on the seats, but then again, you never know.........

Sadly, that is the case with many trains! I was on the 92ts a few weeks ago! I was shocked! I didn't realise the amount of tape on the trains-I thought it was a joke, but no! The seats were frankly, rubbish! I sunk into them (not the cumfy sunk either) and landed onto various hard materials! Not nice.
The age of the trains has probably meant that they are not (often) considered for improvement. Sadly they haven't stood the test of time and are wearing very poorly and love to go walkies whenever possible (maybe due to having the smallest wheels on the network?). The W&City 92ts looks good but only because they get minimum use and 'better' users?
What can be done? New seats-perhaps similar to the 72/73 stock trains-they are still in one piece! Sort out the structural end problems-using similar methods to the D stock? Bit of superglue round those motors?
Finally...these trains which I remember being developed as a kid (and their 86ts kin) were supposed to be the new way forward, but sadly they have simply become a white elephant!

I dont subscribe to the viewpoint that just because they've had abuse they shouldnt get any investment. You can't force the majority of decent fare paying passengers to suffer because of the deliquent few. This is a seperate issue about system entry and security which could possibly be somewhat solved by using double full height gates at stations, or putting twopence on fares and having a suitably equipped BTP officer at every station. Something like that though Anyway, back on topic. The seats are indeed awful and seem always to have been an issue. As has been said before, hopefully 2012 will cure some of the problems though!

Don't forget the 92s on the W&C all had a basic refrub a year or so back with CCTV added and general improvements... The 92s are getting due a refurb... They're now the oldest stock not to have had a refurb... and most of the older stocks have been refurbed since the 92s started coming and/or have replacement schemes are well under way. I would have thought they can expect /better/ 'customer information' systems and internal CCTV...

I have definately noticed improvements, twice now... It's not on many trains though, but when I sat down I couldn't feel the hard metal bits underneath at all. And I think the 96/95TS have sprung seats, not padded, therefore they never really lose their 'spring'. It's like comparing a futon to a mattress, a futon will flatten out after time, a mattress won't.

If the 09/S stock trains have seats like the 95ts seats, it would be good as they are relatively comfortable. The 09ts seems to be an evolution of the 9xts designs and I hope they have learnt from the mistakes in the 92ts. Bombardier built the 92ts though

Bombardier built the 92ts though I'm guessing that the 09TS seats will be padded, the D stock refurbs are padded, the seats before them were springed, so padded seems to the direction LU are headed...
