Why can't they use the stairs? And why does it take so long?

HSE won't allow stairs to be used except in emergencies.

It's not down to the HSE Q8, the whole ticket hall is a building site (or at least it was the night I spent there in July).

They ain't just doing the lifts - the whole station is being 'modernised', Booking hall, platforms, staff areas - the whole lot.

HSE won't allow stairs to be used except in emergencies. Is there a limit set for how deep a station can be to rely on just stairs? Obviously lots of stations on the District have just stairs, but then we're only about 15 feet underground! I remember when Aldwych was closed they said the lifts were too expensive to replace and the station too deep to rely on stairs alone, although of course they rely on them frequently when doing filming etc. there.

It has more to with the fact that it's just not practical or safe to open a station with just a spiral staircase - which is the case at Queensway. And also, as I said, the whole station is being refurbished - which is easier and quicker to do with no punters getting in the way.

So are they going to cover the whole station with that horrible white enameled metal sheeting or are they going to preserve some of the original details? I have to say that Edgware Road on the bakerloo line seems to be a perfect example of what you should do when refurbishing a station (well the platform at least) and Bank (cetral line platforms) seem to be an example of what they should not do!

there has been lots of junk piled up on the station platforms aswell. Along with a layer of dust everywhere!
And next it's Lancaster Gate for three months!!!! I sincerely hope the original tiles of the platform walls are retained as much as possible....

I have noticed that it has remained shut for longer than it should have done. but i have to say, they have done a good job of it, hopefully LAG will be just as good? T/op92, have you heard anything as to when it is going to open? EDIT: OK I have answered my own question. Queensway is going to open on June 12th.

Last I looked, there were no enamel sheets on the platform walls at Queensway - it was all biscuit tiling with nice new full-size metallic roundels.

I went through it last yesterday morning and its no-where near finished, unless for once, they're just going to have a plain platform without advertising, vending machines, map or anything like that...
Its looking good though, but a few days, I don't think so, unless they're working 24 hours!

It isn't being shown as closed on the real time travel map today, which iirc it has been. Does this mean its open?

Unfortunately not; there are contracts in place, which means that equipment [like choccy machines] must be provided. I too would wish to see 'plain stations without the clutter of adverts pasted crudely over trackside features, like at Kentish Town, adverts used to cover the original To Charing Cross tiled sign. All these historical features should be left visible!

however I presume that advertising could be installed during standard engineering hours when the station is closed to passengers anyway, but have the station open during the day. I'm not normally a fan of minimalism, but I think that a station with just a map and a way out sign would be fine.

Don't forget the passengers also need a clock with the map and way out signs!

According to TfL, ITS ALIVE ;D
I wouldn't have thought it was possible when I went through this morning, still loads missing, but in 8 hours or so, they must've done one hell of a job!!

I passed through the station on my way home from work today (it's only slighly out of the way). It's looking quite bright, modern, and clean, although I'm not convinced it's 100% finished. The new lifts have windows in each door (each door has two leafs) - maybe to make people feel safer and/or less claustrophobic. I heard many positive comments from the public passing through the station. I have one arty photo taken at the base of the lifts here www.flickr.com/photos/stephenk1977/167251771/in/set-1617237/
