What are and were the shortest engineering hours on the underground?I reckon the east end of the Jubliee is the shortest nowadays 02:00-04:30.In the past I reckon the Ruislip branch of the central took some beating, last staff stabled Ruislip 23rd 02:45,first staff departed 23rd 03:30.Needless to say 99 times out of 100 it was cancelled due to engineering work and they ran a substitute staff bus.

For me it was always Queen's Park. 0100 - 0515 (so an 0455 call back) but more often than not it was 0130-0145 before the fleet staff had finished on 21 and 24 roads and the juice could go off.

I'm guessing that the tube starts earlier now than it used to. In actual fact, in some areas it starts later than it used to. Years ago, an attempt at running some earlier and later trains was met with complaints from the maintenance companies. They claimed there would be too little engineering hours to do any work (any excuse ). In a rather drastic move, instead of cutting a couple of trains out at each end of the day, they cut right back and we ended up finishing earlier and starting later in some areas - in particular on the H&C/Circle/District. From this Sunday night, Wembley Park will become an area with limited engineering hours. Last Jubilee is booked to stable at 0145. The first train out of depot is then at 0345. This will only continue until mid-December as the early train is actually the RAT (Rail Adhesion Train). Can't believe it's that time of year again!

Well I remember that trains ran virually all night on some lines. The Central west end had staff trains at 02xx and 03xx. the District east end had staffs from Barking at 04:15 and from Upminster at 01:32 which stabled at Barking at 01:59. The Met had some early/late birds as well. IIRC the District had the earliest passenger departure from Acton Town at 04:48 arrive Upminster at 06:07

Well I remember that trains ran virually all night on some lines. The Met had some early/late birds as well. Indeed so. A quick glance at an old 1964 timetable shows for example that the 01:20 Staff train from Baker St arrived at Uxbridge at 02:01 and was followed from Rayners Lane by a Piccadilly staff train arriving at Uxbridge at 02:10. In the morning the first departure was the 04:03 staff train to Neasden, closely followed by the 04:06 staff train to Acton Town. Mind you, in those days on the north end of the Met, just because the current had been switched off it did not mean that it was engineering hours. A number of trains, mostly freight ran overnight. For example there was 9T09, the 03:00 Neasden Yard to Harrow Yard (arrive 03:15, local line from Wembley) or the through services to and from Marylebone such as 1D31, the 03:40 Marylebone to Nottingham (which conveyed Passengers, Parcels and Newspapers) or 1M84, the 23:45 Manchester to Marylebone (Amersham 04/02)
