<<Posts from from Elizabeth Line (CrossRail) opened 24th May 2022 thread - goldenarrow>>A further note on Romford is that they've closed the pedestrian ramp on the south side of the station. They were having to put a security person there to prevent fare evasion as there was only an Oyster reader, not a full barrier.

That is probably the old LTSR entrance - London Tilbury & Southend Railway, who built that route to Upminster and at one time ran trains through to Grays.

It isn't. That's the Urban Chocolatier building on the other side of South Street.

Was evening peak exit back in the 1960s with ticket checking at the doorway. A quick way out to the buses, avoiding the stairs. Is at the south end of the subway linking all LNER platforms.

The LMS station entrance was certainly on the east side of South Street, and the wooden platform accessed by stairs. Does anyone know where the booking office window(s) was / were, and whether there were other facilities such as w.c.s and waiting rooms? Mod edit [Antharro]: Quote partially removed. Was evening peak exit back in the 1960s with ticket checking at the doorway. A quick way out to the buses, avoiding the stairs. Is at the south end of the subway linking all LNER platforms. It was open again yesterday. When I worked for a firm doing maintenance on the line the door was a constant source of call outs. The door is very heavy and the closer is heavy duty and used to knock the frame out of alignment.

There are plans for a new entrance on this site, with undercover stairway and lift, which is understandable but much slower than the slope exit! before and plan

It would be pretty disruptive as that's a major bus stop. Mod edit [Antharro]: Quote partially removed. I might be getting my wires crossed here, but isn't a new entrance being added on the north side of the bridge, which I believe will have lift access to the subway?

Yes. Not sure if it's open yet, but the doors are there.

The entrance on the north side of the station is to and from a small walk way called Battis Way not sure this has opened yet .

Mod note: A number of posts in this thread have been edited to remove unnecessary quotes. Please do not quote the entire post above you verbatim when replying. There's no need and it just wastes page space meaning more scrolling when reading the page. By all means selectively quote where necessary, especially if replying to a post further up the page.

The current lift programme will provide step-free access to the E.Line platforms. This proposal will provide a lift to the Overground and fast London platforms. It looks like the new stairs will not link with the troublesome ramp doorway, but curve behind the lift to presumably meet the current stairway at an intermediate landing.

The entrance on the north side of the station is to and from a small walk way called Battis Way not sure this has opened yet . Back in the day, that area was jammed with newspaper vans collecting the latest editions of the evening papers from the trains to rush out around the area. They were revised hourly from before lunch. They even featured a small section on the cover "stop press" for the latest reports. Some people would buy each as they arrived to get the latest sports reports and racing results before revising their bets! Post Office vans also collected and delivered for the trains, the station lift connecting to the subway in that area. How things change!

It then became a pretty seedy back alley, I believe.

A correspondent tells me staff called this position Windy Corner, with no protection for them!
