No; this is testing, not commissioning. The line will remain closed all weekend.

From what I saw at Upminster (I was spare both days), the testing mostly involved an engineers train.

When I came through Barking on c2c about 1pm on Sunday there was an S stock in platform 6 with the doors enabled. There were about 5 people in hi vis jackets sat in the easternmost car not doing anything obvious.

There was system testing between Upminster and Mile End (not Stepney Green because VCC3 was still operating a revenue service). Tests were undertaken using both S7 and S8 trains and an Engineer's train. A lot of the testing involved the transition into CBTC at Upminster and various moves around the Barking Sidings area.

How did test trains that arrived on the westbound at Mile End station on the District Line get back on to the eastbound line to return to Barking or Upminster ?

Either they reversed at West Ham or they went upto Whitechapel.

Either they reversed at West Ham or they went upto Whitechapel. If they didn’t go to Whitechapel to reverse west to east, the only other way would have been to travel wrong road to West Ham and go via the siding/loop to regain the eastbound line.

They reversed at Whitechapel. At Mile End the tripcocks were cut back in (and the tripcock latch relays on the train were forced to switch over) so the train could enter the CBTC system again in the correct mode at Stepney Green. They then worked to/from Whitechapel to reverse in CTBC, before switching back to tripcock at Stepney Green and re-entering CBTC at Mile End.
On Sunday, there was no testing West of West Ham and all trains reversed there.
