Successive Saturdays now the c.0700 arrival at Stratford has run into platform 10A. It appeared that this was because both platforms 1 & 2 were occupied. This isn't a problem as such except there are no pink Oyster readers on 10A. I wonder how many passengers were overcharged for their journey as a result?

There are select London Overground services at the start of the day booked to use Platforms 10, 10a and 11 at Stratford of which the service you highlight is one of them. I’m guessing this is to maintain route knowledge in the event of disruption.

Mainly due to lack of platform space due to us running 10 trains an hour.. Only 2 platforms available to us that cannot cope hence 10a & 11.

Is this also because whilst it was possible to fit two 3 carriage Class 378 trains in one platform (either 1 or 2) this is no longer an option with 5 car trains?

Is there no stepping back facility for London Overground services at Stratford or are the platform clearance times so slow that it wouldn’t make that much difference?

Is there no stepping back facility for London Overground services at Stratford or are the platform clearance times so slow that it wouldn’t make that much difference? It's generally safest to assume that Stratford is a mess. It's such a shame that the combination of Olympics and Crossrail was not taken as an opportunity to demolish the lot and start again.

Thanks for your answers. I don't mind the non standard routings at all but I do think provision should be made for the pink Oyster machines at the exits. In the end it's a toss up between paying the correct fare and making one's connection. After a set of night shifts, the connection always wins!

That wouldn't have helped much with the locations of the actual platforms - which are where they are because of the way the separate lines physically approach Stratford.

Satellite imagery suggests that platform extensions would be possible..... but would require track and signalling alterations plus the demolition of what looks like some sort of railway equipment room, none of which will come cheap.

I understand that pink readers on 10A are coming. Stratford is a bit of a nightmare for arranging to do any work at though so it may take a while.

Why can't platform 12 be used? It even uses the same steps as 1 & 2 - at one end of the platform.

I'm talking about the building with the greenish roof beside the tracks backing onto Montfitchet Road seen not the buildings on the end of the platform
That would allow the tracks to be moved apart and the island platform extended westward by a significant amount between the tracks (something the current alignment doesn't permit) thus allowing two 5 car trains to platform share.

Ah that building.. Yes I believe it is an equipment room.. & as will all railway improvements the cost no doubt will be through the roof.. As I mentioned before it seems that there was no foresight for future planning.. I had an idea that London Overground could replace Greater Anglia services to Meridian Water & that way free up some space at Stratford.

This is becoming a bit "RIPAS" - let's not discuss remodelling Stratford station in this thread, thanks.
