Just watched the video here: districtdavesforum.co.uk/thread/30099/north-london-line-1989Super nostalgic stuff with class 416 (2-EPB) trains. The motor/gear noise and cast iron brake block squeal are really well recorded. Amazing thing is that the number of passengers is so low it looks like there's a covid lockdown in force!

I was baffled by the stock, having thought the 501s were replaced by 313s. Wikipedia seems to indicate that the 2-EPBs were a short-term measure during an engineering blockade of part of the line. I didn't remember Southern Region units having the prison bars on the windows though so presumably they were going to be used for long enough to be worth fitting them.

The 501s were withdrawn in 1985. 313s did take over directly from 501s on the WatEus route, but 416s operated the North London Line for some years, from the time of electrification to North Woolwich in 1985 until some more 313s became available - I know not where from.
The use of (2 car) 416s instead of (3 car) 313s may have been to do with platform lengths, as before electrification the North Woolwich line was operated by 2-car diesel units. Or it may simply have been that, until withdrawal of the Broad Street (later Liverpool Street) to Watford Junction service there were not enough 313s to cover the North London line as well.

The 2EPBs made to transfer from Southern to NLL using the recently removed connection at Richmond, into/out of pfm.3.

I didn't know that the connection at Richmond had been removed---surely this is false economy. losing a link like this which provides a bit of flexibility in an emergency or whatever is a retrograde step. It's not as though much track involved .

re: the 416's, especially in their latter years on this route I recall there being severe issues with peak hour overcrowding and sometimes people unable to board trains.
I feel sure that at times double unit 4 carriage trains were run.
I am not exactly sure of the timeframes but suspect that one of the reasons for their being removed from this route would have been the rebuilding of part of the North London line and conversion to overhead wire power supply for the Eurostar trains.
As an aside, if anyone was expecting me to suggest that their unsuitability was a reason for removing them from this service, then whilst you are right (they were unsuitable) the reality is that is not how things work. Not then and I'm not so sure even today.

Class 313s replaced the 2 EPBs in 1989. They came from the Great Northern routes.

Class 313s replaced the 2 EPBs in 1989. They came from the Great Northern routes. That will be why I do not have any S-VHS video of them on the Richmond - North Woolwich service; as I only got my camcorder in the December 1989 Christmas sales.

It's not as though much track involved . But it doesn't provide anything useful really. It can only be accessed via an out of service shunt and there are much easier ways to get from the SWR network to the NLL, either using the curves from Kew - South Acton, or at Clapham Junction.
