During asbestos removal from Bull & Bush station site in 1978, Northern line worked single line Golders Green to Hampstead on the northbound for about a month. No problems except first Sunday one of the first southbound trains hit a misaligned negative current rail which came up through the car floor! When Totteridge southbound platform road slipped on the bank, the service worked to and from Barnet single line on the Northbound. see www.lurs.org.uk/UN200%2008%20SEP%201978.pdf for details. To put in and withdraw the single line working on the first and last Sundays, service suspended Camden Town to Brent Cross, with single line shuttles on both lines from there to Edgware. Single line working was signalled for the works, and gap between a northbound working and then southbound over the single line was filled with a reversal at Hampstead on the single line from northbound platform. This was all set up in under two months. What about today?

What could you do if the Engineers wanted both northbound tracks at Kilburn for bridge renewals? In 1977-78 they operated weekend services using the two southbound tracks, at a time when more connections between the lines remained. The Met service reversed south to north in Neasden depot except at the extremes of the day when they always covered for the Bakerloo stopping service, but limited to 4-car trains by the length of West Hampstead siding at that time, and reversing in Wembley Park north siding. Southbound trains from the Stanmore branch crossed to the Met line south of Wembley Park, limited to serving their two platforms, and crossed back before Finchley Road to continue on to Elephant & Castle. Northbound was normal until West Hampstead, where they detrained passengers to cross the platform to a waiting empty train to continue their northbound journey. The arriving train then reversed via the siding to the southbound platform to become the next northbound train, serving all Bakerloo platforms until crossing back to the correct line by the Willesden Green P.Way yard to serve the northbound Dollis Hill platform and then as usual to Stanmore. Trains on ATO lines are restricted to very low speeds when performing any move which is not signalled, so any organised wrong-line working couldn't be done without altering the train to allow normal speed working without signalling codes.
