Elderly neighbour tells me that he used to catch a Piccadilly Line train in the early morning at West Kensington to go to Northfields. Surely he is mistaken. I cannot think of a single reason for a Piccadilly Line train to ever be on the slow line (District Line tracks) east of Baron's Court.

We used to do that move in the early mornings as part of a night shift. Think it stopped in the early eighties. |

Would these trains be the ones that used to stop all stations from Acton Town to Hammersmith? I caught one very early in ~1996 when I needed to get to Waterloo for Eurostar, but I can't remember if it went back to the Piccadilly tracks at Hammersmith.

When a new driver learns their line with an Instructor Operator, part of the training involves covering all available reversing moves available on their given line. Most of the timetabled ones are done practically by actually carrying out the move with a train. Those which are not normally timetabled will either be covered in theory by video/proffessional discussion or as in the case of West Kensington for Picadilly drivers, observation in the cab of another line's rolling stock. District line drivers do the same for the Piccadilly tracks between Hammersmith and Acton Town - they are taken into the cab of a 73 stock to observe the route. The reason they're shown how to reverse at West Kensington is perhaps a little historical these days - as mentioned, they no longer have any timetabled reversers there - but it does provide an emergency reversing point if they happen to take a wrong'un at Hammersmith or need to make use of West Ken due to problems on the Piccadilly. To be fair though, I think I've known them to use it twice in 15 years so it's certainly not a regular Piccadilly line move. Of course it will soon become irrelevant once CBTC arrives in that area. |

I think there is still a D stock reverse plate in the 4 foot in advance of the eastbound starting signal at West Kensington.

There is still lots around especially last time I was in Upminster Depot and I think that one just past WB34 is a C/R plate

These trains provided an early morning service to the west of the line without compromising overnight tunnel maintenance. Of course Picc trains had used West Ken since the opening of the line in 1906 when Lillie Bridge was the sole line depot until extensions into the suburbs in the 1930s, being adapted from the District line steam depot which became surplus to requirements with electrification of those routes a few years earlier.

I used the 04.43 staff train from Alperton (which originated from Uxbridge) to West Kensington more times than I care to remember 1967-1971. I then dropped back onto the first eastbound District to whichever station I was working at. Sometimes I would drop back at Acton Town and catch the first eastbound District, which followed the Picc staff train by 8 minutes. The joy of doing that was that the District train was timetabled to be Q Stock and if I was especially lucky, the rear car would be a Q23.
Piccadilly Line trains to West Kensington (staff and passenger) were withdrawn from Working Timetable 27 in October 1991.

Is this move allowed now for 73 Tube Stock seeing as the District line has upgraded to 750v East of Barons Court?

Is this move allowed now for 73 Tube Stock seeing as the District line has upgraded to 750v East of Barons Court? it is in these pages somewhere; (trying to find!) that certain equipment need to be isolated, cab A/C, saloon heaters etc if a '73 Stock is to work beyond Barons Court EB. |

TC12 / 2017 at foot of page 12: The 1973 Stock is permitted to reverse at either West Kensington via WC9 signal (eastbound platform wrong road starter) or via Lillie Bridge Depot only, following normal Rule Book procedures, the route to High Street Kensington is no longer permitted. Anything since then?
