when did the trial painted (but not refurbished) A stock trains first enter service
there is conflicting sources out there that say either 1988 or 1989

I have had a look at my back numbers of 'London Underground Rolling Stock' by Brian Hardy (pub: Ian Allan). The 1990 edition says, in relation to the trial exterior repainting of the A Stock on the East London Line, that the first repaint (Unit 5066) was completed at Ruislip in November 1998. The other 6 units used on the ELL were done by Vic Berry at Leicester in 1989-90. The final one (Unit 5122) was in the Red Doors livery finally adopted, except that the roof was white instead of grey. As subsequent editions say the same thing I suppose it is correct. Additionally, the 1988 volume records that in 1986-87 various experiments were made with repainting car roofs either maroon or blue, with car numbers in matching colours.

might explain why on video 125s Met and District video from 1989 the 2 A stocks at Whitechapel are both unpainted

Video 125s Metropolitan Main Line (filmed in 1995) features both painted and unpainted A stocks.

I would need to look at my super 8 films from the late 1980's. I feel sure that I filmed this in around that time frame, but am unsure if it was '88 or '89.
I also filmed here in 1990, but S-VHS-C video, with sound.

i certainly remember seeing them in the early 90s. The first units chosen were deliberately double ended non-de icing units which were more suitable for the East London Line (ELL) and didn’t leave the mainline short.
The last unit painted was 5122 in what was not fair from the chosen corporate ‘Orsman’ livery and this was a de icer presumably as there weren’t many untreated left which weren’t de icers and it was expected to be shown off on the mainline too!
