OK - here's one for you all. What is the physical difference between the first 6 refurbished D stocks, and the rest? Clues will be given if no-one gets the answer later this week ;D

Okay, this obviously doesn't relate to the amount of DMI's or cameras in the cars, nor the white stripe by the doors, separating the blue band....

ISTR the first 6 weren't all double-enders, and not all of the fleet have been done yet so that can't be it.
I'm guessing that a component that isn't blindingly obivous to your average punter has been changed from one manufacturor (sp?) to another?
Is it a complete difference (i.e. something(s) is/are present/missing) or a gradual (on the later something(s) is/are longer/shorter/bigger/smaller/fatter/thinner/etc)?

Is this so glaringly obvious that it's something like the seat cover colours?
Or maybe the grab-handles?

A wild guess: The GPS transponder isn't on the roof?

A wild guess: The GPS transponder isn't on the roof? Close - but not quite right.

On looking at a few photos of the refurbs and being close with the GPS equipment. I'm thinking now the opposite of that: The GPS equipment is on the roof?

The Difference between the first 6 refurbs and the rest of the fleet is the location of the GPS transponder/Reciver. The first 6 have it on the rear of the DM the rest have it some where else.? Am I closer?

I have a feeling it's not the GPS transponder itself, but the area it sits in. The difference between the first 6 and the rest is the shape of where the transponder sits on the DM. The first 6 seem to have the cutout in the curved roof above the Intercar door while the rest of the Fleet have a curved roof.

Is it not out of guague without the cutout? My thought exactly. For reference, here's an SSL loading gauge diagram. No mention is made of vertical clearance, however. Presumably it must be checked against structures on the line(s) it is intended to run on. Compare to Tube Stocks:

What has actually happened is that the GPS receiver is now incorporated into the roof structure - hence no need for the cut out - so it is no longer immediately obvious that there is anything there at all. I'll try to get a photo later and post to show what it now looks like.
