I've been using the North London Line for the best part of 15 years and today I witnessed a train in passenger service skipping a station for the first time. I was at Finchley Road & Frognal around 18:36 and the next train wasn't due for 9 minutes. A couple of minutes later a train in service passed through the station without stopping and headed straight into the tunnel. There was no advanced warning that a non stopping train was passing through until it was rolling through the platform which triggered a message on the information boards to stand back from the platform edge. I could see that the train then stopped at Hampstead Heath. Two questions: Is this a normal occurrence? I thought 10mins+ was a long time to wait during the peak for the next train so my guess was this was an attempt at regulating the service. However I have never witnessed this happen on the overground. How does the early warning system work when a train is not scheduled to stop at a station? I've witnessed this with freight trains at West Brompton where there is an advanced announcement a few minutes before the train is due, one just before it passes, and a message on the information boards while it's passing. Any reason why this wan't the case this time? Thanks

I have experienced multiple skipping of stations in disruption: Gospel Oak non stop Willesden Junction; Stratford non stop Highbury and Islington; West Hampstead to Camden Road. This scenario was always communicated on the train but whether to waiting passengers at intermediate stations I obviously don't know!
