Northern operate the similar class 333 units on the Aire & Wharf Valley routes to the northwest of Leeds. Some cl321 are also used to boost capacity, IIRC some have just moved from Scotrail to Yorkshire to facilitate this. The ones that came from Scotland are actually class 322s, although modifications to them and Northern's 321/9s since they arrived in 2011 have rendered the two classes almost identical . The 322s started life on the Stansted Express and have found use in several other areas. Northern has a large fleet of 331s on order ( no relation to 332 or 333 - there is no logic to the classification system any more......) so it is doubtful there will be a home for the 333s there.

For starters, Scotrail don't have any 321s to send down - they have 320s which are near identical other than that they are 3 car instead of 4, but they've recently converted a bunch of 321s into 320s for additional capacity. They are however, releasing a bunch of 158s and 170s to Nothern (both classes of which are making their way into Nottingham for me to see, 158s in service, 170s on training runs, but that's by the by), and giving themselves a bit of a headache, as their new class 385 trains are suffering massive delays for their entry into service, leaving Scotrail short of units! In the distant past (2011) Scotrail did transfer some 322s down to Northern, but nothing recent.
It is also worth noting that Northern's new EMUs are due to directly replace their 321s and 322s in the West Yorkshire area, but that shouldn't preclude them from trying to take on these HEx units, perhaps enabling them to send the 8 new units to operate services on the newly electrified lines on the better side of the Pennines *flees*

Are the 331s not being made by CAF, like the 332 and 333 are? So perhaps some (obscure) logic. Disclaimer: I hold a Yorkshire passport, but have also passed the Scouse citizenship test so now have dual nationality: I'm allowed to moan about both counties.

And the 331s will have traction equipment from TSA (of Austria) rather than Siemens like the 332/333s. And if TOPs classification makes sense, why is 334 a Juniper, built by Alsthom? Why is the Transpennine variant being built by CAF classified 397? Shouldn't it have a 33x number - or maybe an 8xx?

Why is the Transpennine variant being built by CAF classified 397? Because it's not far from 390 (Pendolino); why would an 'intercity' franchise like TPE be buying suburban trains like those Northern ones that take ages and get in the way when they could buy ones like the whizzy tilty ones that fly you along at a million miles an hour? In short politics. Which is probably a good point for me to say back to CrossRail at Heathrow please.

How's the new Tfl rail work? I often stay at Heathrow Travelodge, but have always taken the Picc, despite it being a bit of a trundle. If I can get from Paddington to Heathrow faster for the same price via Oyster/Contactless then I'll jump at the chance.

I’m assuming that a zone 1-6 paper ticket is valid?

I’m assuming that a zone 1-6 paper ticket is valid? You assume correctly.
