When overground revamped the Enfield Town/Cheshunt/Chingford line stations a couple of years ago, several of the stations were given impressive 'bullseye' style signs on the station exteriors... Bethnal Green, Clapton, Bruce Grove and Theobalds Grove are some but I'm sure there are more. These all are similar to the UNDERGROUND signs you see all over the city but with one difference - the signs at the tube stations light up at night, the overground signs remain unlit. This wouldnt be a big deal were it not for the coils of white electrical flex coming out of each of these signs, tied up and waiting to be plugged in ...two years and still not done!

Illuminated signs require planning consent and a power supply.
A railway company is allowed to put a non illuminated sign outside a station without consent.

And an "internally illuminated" sign is considered to be the same as a neon discharge-tube sign, which in some areas planning authorities dislike.

So would you say these are signs that were ordered without realising permission was needed ...or permission has been refused ...or Overground just haven't got around to switching them on yet? (Pity as there are plenty of plain exterior signs at other stations, such as Stoke Newington, that are illuminated by a bulb placed below it but these internally illuminated signs, which are far more eye-catching, all remain unlit :-(

At a guess, I'd say that the signs needed to be up at once, after which the permission process to illuminate them could run at its own pace.
