TEA !!

Young Chris in Dorset has a website that expounds the virtues of tea. Very good it is too. However he also states on that site that the milk is put in the cup AFTER the tea. Now to me that is sacrilege as I was always told "milk in first" This was the criterion followed on railways for generations when making a brew in a can. (Except occasionally when the can was made for consumption on the road) The three things you carried in your kitbag were a little divided container with tea at one end and sugar the other. Plus a generally glass ottle with screw top containing milk. A small medicine bottle often seen. these were small enough to fit inside the teacan. Some men carried a strainer too Also similarly when brewing up in teapot. Tea with milk in last doesn't taste the same to me. What do you guys think?

If he states that the milk should be put in AFTER the tea and you were told to put the "milk in last" arent these one and the same?
Surely if you are putting the milk in AFTER the tea then you are putting the "milk in last"
Or am i horribly confused?
I think the public has a right to know

Complicated stuff. Well, here's what i think:
If you have made tea with a teabag, milk has to go in last.
If you make tea in a pot (the way i prefer) then it is better put in first.

And if you make a flask leave the milk out all together 'cos it's just (and dare i use this adjective when talking about tea) disgusting. Alternativly you could carry it seperate and add when you want to drink your tea. Or you could find a tea room.

Chris and Chris is right (sic) but why has redsam read it the opposite way round? Is it me or him?
Milk in first does taste better (allegedly because milk in last "shocks" it and the sudden change in temperature tends to make it want to curdle) but needs time to do a proper brew-up. Hence most of us who use teabags since we are always in a hurry have forgotten what 'proper' tea should taste like.
I hope DD will soon give Chris an award for the most posts on a single non-railway subject ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ah-ha! But IS this TRULY a non- railway related topic? Quite. As far as most people are concerned, no tea, no trains. Therefore the subject of tea is a vital component of the railway industry.

Chris, I think that if by now I (or the other Admins come to that!) had a problem with the content of your posts, you'd have heard about it by now! And I *think* that (apart from your tea obsession of course ) most of your posts have been perfectly valid!

But now I'm wondering (if Bob Crow & the RMT can pursuade LUL to bring back guards) whether we'll again see a motorman stopping when entering the platform to drop off his mate's can with hot sweet tea (made in the shunters cabin) in it. Hot sweet tea with full-fat milk. Healthy drinking!

I like coffee and hate tea TAKE THAT BACK! Hate tea? Why? Sure, coffee has it's moments but nothing could be better than tea. There is nothing more thirst quenching than a hot cup of tea. Tea has a million uses. Whenever anyone on TV is in trouble, they always say, "Lets have a nice cup of tea and sort it out." Whenever they just say "lets sort it out", they end up fighting. At the end of the White Stripes song "It's true that we love one another", you hear them say at the end "Was that good? Jolly good. Cup of tea then Bruce, lets celebrate." You have tea parties. A nice civilised affair when you all discuss, um, the weather! Never a coffee party. What about tea rooms? Never a coffee room. Or beer room. Tea is obviously much supirior and sells. The list is endless!

I have no comeback. I am defeated in the face of the great tea. You must understand that this forum is an outpost of the tea mafia. There are several members who drink coffee as well (and some even prefer it ) but to mention it is as bad as bringing beef to a vegetarian barbecue, so broadcasting your coffee liking will have to be suppressed if you are not to have a visit in the middle of the night by the Tea godfather I assume black,black....in your sig. refers to coffee not tea?

Nah, my signature refers to the underground, when you enter a tunnel 'black, black, black, black, black, station' etc etc

It's not just railways that run on tea. When I was early supervisor (start at 0400), what did I do first? Check the overtime? Check how many buses were available for service? Nope - I PUT THE KETTLE ON!!!*
*For tea, coffee - no way. (BTW only Yorkshire tea for hard water allowed)

When tea was first introduced to Britain, it was expensive and exclusive to the upper classes, who drank it from porcelain china.
When it got cheaper and filtered down the social order, their earthenware cups shattered under the thermal shock of hot tea, hence the habit of putting a drop of cold milk in first.
Personally I prefer tea with lemon juice: coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon!

But what is the optimum length of time for 'mashing' your tea. I personally leave it a good five mins (bag in cup) as I like very strong tea.
