More than 6 years ago I uploaded and shared my images of a visit to the Island Line to my, now long defunct, Fotopic account. I then mislaid the images of my holiday with Mel that had started at a beer festival on the West Somerset Railway at Minehead and ended on the Isle of Wight. Today I found the files....... I've looked at the Island Line images initially and have uploaded a photographic study of the line and rolling stock (161 images) from September 2010 to my Flickr account. I hope you like them... and HERE THEY ARE[links directly to the album]More images to come of the Isle of Wight and the West Somerset Railway in the coming week or two....

Do they actually use guards?

I've noticed that they have restored Passenger Door Open (PDO) on these trains, complete with yellow surrounds, as they were originally designed with back in 1938! - Some things do come round in circles!

IIRC they do, plus a ticket collector when I visited a few years back. The last I visited the Guard sold tickets on the 2 car units, may be in the summer a third member of staff on the longer trains ?

There's a nice video collage on the BBC South news site from a few days ago, remembering 50 years since the end of steam on the island. Which everyone except a select few, myself included, knew that wasn't the case! The IWSR has just had a record season running a record number of days with steam trains in 2016.

Not from 2016, but I spent a day on the IoW in August 2015 and took a few photos of the trains and line. The trains do look more weathered than those in Chris's photos, the cars forming Train 007 apparently had rust issues on the roof. Train 006 looked in better shape. Train 006 looked in better shape It seems they are going through an overhaul program, 008 was released last year with a new coat of paint (regards to Steve Thorpe for the photo) 483008 by Steve Thorpe, on Flickr

They were, I believe, expecting to be receiving 1973 stock ex-Piccadilly Line in the very near future (if not already), but TfL keep pushing back the date of their withdrawal from LU metals so I don't know what the current state of play is.

The salt water and spay on the Ryde pier does more to rust the trains than falling leaves from the trees I thought that sea water presented the greatest risk to the longevity of the 38TS.... however I was reliably told first hand that my theory of was completely wrong !! During my visit in 2010 I wondered into down to the depot and asked if I could capture images. I was told I couldn't, however was kindly invited in. I asked if the sea water/spray caused problems and learned that it was rainwater that fell and collected underneath the doorways that presented the greatest challenge with regards to rotting and resulting constant maintenance.

The 1938 stock (Class 483) arrived in 1989, replacing the Standard Stock (classes 485, 486) completely by 1992. So in 1985 you would have ridden the Standard Stock.
Standard Stock, despite the name, had many detail differences between the various batches built over a ten year period 1924-1934, notably in the number of doors in the trailer cars. The 44 vehicles that went to the IoW came from a number of different batches.

What does show up in the pics is the poor state of the track , bullhead rail with keys, lots of rusted out of use track etc. The contract for South West trains to run Island Line is due to run out this year ? Also the TOC is responsible for all track work ,signal maintance ,stations etc.

I seem to recall reading that the Standard Stock used on the IoW had come from the Piccadilly's fleet, following its replacement by 1959 stock. By 1967 the Bakerloo had not seen Standard stock for nearly thirty years. The 1938 stock on the IoW was ex-Bakerloo though. This is the only colour photo I have found of the interior of Standard stock, although the moquette is very 1970s (similar to that originally used on D78 stock). EDIT Here's a better one, at the LTM collection EDIT again This photo is captioned as standard stock on the IoW, although mysteriously, like the first photo, it also seems to be upholstered in 1ate 1970s D78 stock moquette!
