One thing that annoys me about commuting is the problem with heating/ventilation. In the summer/when underground it's too hot. In the winter it's freezing on overground sections? Which stock has good heating - I know the picadilly is non existent.

Stationmaster, how right you are. Something that LT has never been able to get quite right. Some random recollections: The D stock in summer was the worst culprit in the early 80s. In summer, its ventilation was practically nil. The 62TS was better in the summer, but cold in the winter as its "pull and lift" quarterlights used to jam in the open position and deposit a jet of freezing air down the back of one's neck. In winter, the 92TS's fans develop a life of their own, and hum and clatter at high velocity, playing havoc with one's ears and thought processes. The C stock, as I remember it, originally had a kind of inverted Mount Etna in the centre of each vestibule, and little else. The 1967TS I used to find good in winter, but deadly in summer if the train got stuck in a tunnel. I posted on another thread how my heart sank on seeing a D approach on the hottest day of the year - I find the new SSL trains quite civilised! I suppose it's an unsolvable conundrum that the same heating and ventilation has to cope with a crowded train in summer 5oft under Central London, and a freezing winter 5am between Epping and Theydon with few on board.

Those C stock 'Mount Etnas' were just on C69. Even when they worked, they were fairly useless, you just got a puddle of hot air at the top of the door vestibules. Any more just leaked out when the doors opened at the frequent stations on C stock routes. And of course C stock had 4 double doorways a car or well over 30% of the bodyside opening! C77 had some panel heaters that were much better.

The 1992 stock are pretty awful in summer, with the big windows curving round towards the roof causing a greenhouse effect. They have now applied a dark tint to the windows, although I'm not sure how much effect it's had.

Autocorrected LUL stock perhaps?

Autocorrected LUL stock perhaps? That's good enough for me NF! I thought we might have been discussing Pullman cars on 92 stock for a moment! Wouldn't need cookers in the summer, they'd be hot enough already!

Pullman cars on the 92TS? Only on the Loop, surely, and exclusively to serve the magnates of Chigwell!

During the summer I noticed that with the S-Stock, on very sunny days, they were murder on the overground sections, partly because the aircon could not cope with that much direct sunlight, and partly because of the sun shining directly on you.
As soon as they entered underground sections, things began to improve.

A stock had lovely heaters toasty in winter. They could get a little hot in the summer but at least you could open the windows and drop the com door windows. I'm not sure this country really gets that hot often but the S stock climate is pretty reasonable which make up for having to use the train itself!
The D stock had to receive hopper windows because of the ventilation issue.

<<The D stock had to receive hopper windows because of the ventilation issue.>> Indeed they did, but they were so small and opened so little the improvement was only marginal!

I noticed today how cold the D stock trains were compared to the S stock. Probably because they've been sat in the depots with the power off, rather than being out and about every day.

Yes, it wasn't a major gripe. I doubt that it would be a problem many days each year, and I probably only noticed it as I was 'bashing the iron' and spent a long time on overground Met sections on one particular (very hot) day.

I used to get an early a.m. Central Line which had just come out of Loughton Sidings after overnight stabling. Unless someone had remembered to leave the heating on, it was like a fridge in the winter!
