Hi, I've suggested pre 1997 so current facilities won't be discussed PLEASE would you post memories of facilities - history over date provided, date withdrawn, the menu, opening times, cost and the service? Whilst not LU, my earliest memory is at the age of about 8, in 1958, I was allowed by my Mum to walk down the road and buy myself Fish & Chips for 1/9d ( about 10p / 11p ) for my Friday night dinner @ 1700 hrs (5 pm !!!) Please would some of our older-serving members here add their own recollections? I hope it might become an interesting recollection and discussion thread. Also, re: unofficial practice in twin manning where drivers could brew up and stop short, leaving their Guard's brew where he (not she in those days I suspect) had a warm brew to collect when the train was fully in the station. Any and all reminiscences and memories appreciated, please. cheers,

OK - the best was the old power house canteen at Neasden. Everything smelt of coal dust but they did a really good breakfast. Then there were the bus canteens, Baker Street and Wood Green were two I remember. Wood green was small but they did good cooking.
And yes, we did brew up. The driver would make the tea at Arsenal in the little room at the east end of the EB platform. Between there and Finsbury Park, he would mix up the tea and milk and divide it into two cans. At FPk, he would stop short at the guard's position to place the tea can on the platform. He would then draw up to get the whole train in the station and the guard would open his door to find his tea waiting for him.
There was a similar process at Mansion Hse and Tower Hill EB. Circle guards would usually get their cans at Aldgate.
The Arsenal facility was withdrawn after an occasion when a driver dashed into the room to make tea one afternoon and interrupted the station foreman and a lady ticket collector "in flagrante" on the mess room table. He did say "Excuse me" while he filled his can but the couple were not best pleased at the interruption. Unfortunately, the "service" was never resumed. Mmm.

I was once introduced into the canteen at Wembley Park - an oasis of warmth on a cold day and had one of the very best fried egg sandwiches in my life. True comfort food.
I was told it was possible for drivers to ring ahead their order and have it waiting for them on arrival - true service that !

Are there any tea points left ? I can only think of Acton Town, but is it a tea point or a bus shelter to stand when you wait for your train?
Have no experience of old canteens, but modern one's don't look that good. The one @ Northfields springs to mind as a good example (sic).
However bad staff canteens are, they're nothing compared to the station staff facilities.

Hmm, poky mess rooms!!!!! I work on the JLE, go through Canary Wharf, lovely station, go to the staff accommodation! At my station, more than two people in the mess room, and you start struggling to breathe. I like this thread, very nostalgic, must be lots of stories out there, come on people!

You might not believe it, but the museum has a pretty comprehensive collection of canteen crockery, cutlery, and even kitchen utensils and pans. There is also a sign stating that smoking is not permitted for two separate fifteen minute periods around lunch time (can't remember the exact times). Not quite the same as having a non smoking section, you would have had to eat pretty quickly if you didn't want to have any smoke around. The computer should know where all of these things came from. The mess room in the depot is decorated with reproductions of various canteen posters and menus, the originals being amongst the 30 000 items in the poster store.

Edgware had a good canteen, although strictly a bus canteen it was physically attached to the train crew acommodation. I was a Station Guard at Edgware and spent many a hour in there on a spare shift. I was in there on business not so long back, it is a training facility now. Even the snooker hut has been converted, it is now the LSM's office! Funny how things change.
High Barnet had the best canteen apparently, but that was just before my time.

Bus canteens were the best, Shepherd's Bush garage / High Barnet come to mind Camden Town was full of mice, even the little side room that had the gas cooker in a family of mice moved in and claimed squatters rights for a while. Acton Town after they refurbed in the 70's ceiling was shaped like a tunnel the carpet had lines on and yes they ran in the direction of the ceiling, with Dis & Pic sitting on opposite sides only allowed to share if invited or playing cards the Depot crews sat where ever they were clssed as Dis though. Wembley Park anyone older enough remember the mad german women she chased a driver once with a very large knife.

My restricted knowledge is of Loughton (Essex) / Central Line 1950's - 1960's.
Loughton Bus Garage had its own canteen until the garage was closed, sold and redeveloped into flats. I think that was broadly around 1967 when the Victoria Line opened and most local bus routes were changed to centralise on Walthamstow Central to link to the "new" tube. Loughton as far as I know, was a tube staff clock in depot, and with bus terminations diverted to the rebuilt Loughton tube station forecourt, the former tube staff canteen then became shared by bus crew. The canteen was subsequently closed, rented off to the private sector and became a public takeaway of various Indian/Chinese menus/proprietors etc.
So is the most Eastbound Central Line depot signing on point (sorry - layman - don't know how you guys refer to it "properly" - now Leytonstone?
and btw, I remember the early staff trains etc. from Stratford via Leyton through to Loughton and further East from the 1950's.....
As an entirely separate point re: Loughton, there was the old LNER playing fields and Social Club that I recollect was active up to the early 1960's? Now, obviously, yet another housing estate.

Loughton bus garage lasted till 1986 (when London Buses lost the 20/167 and other routes in the area). The garage came down / flats went up around 1990...

Upton Park Garage had an excellent canteen when I worked there (96 - 98 IIRC) - the current LUL canteens that I have been in are not a patch on it ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for that bit of info, Suncloud. I moved away from the Loughton area in 1974 so am grateful for getting any more info. to find out what happened thereafter. It brings back such memories from around 1957-1969 of the 254, the 38A, and the GreenLine 718 (based at Harlow when Epping Garage was closed) where CRL4 often operated... Sorry - this is an Underground Forum !!! If you fancy a chat please PM me to exchange Loughton reminiscences

Can anyone remember specific canteen Menu options and Prices and approximate dates, please, here? For example, did you get your "main meal" of the day at a canteen because of your shift pattern, what it was, choice of courses, and what it cost you? Also, just a tea or snack, what it comprised and what it cost in roughly what year, please?

I've just found an old thread in the archives on similar topic: download HERE20p for a cup of hot water these days That must cost you about 31p of gross wages or about £ 240 pa, compared with £ 15 for a year's supply of decent teabags!!! Heck. I recall some 1990's main line stock have industrial 230V sockets - for cleaners equipment etc? Bet they don't fit them on the 09TS for you :-( The electricity for 3 brews a day on a decent kettle would cost around £ 6 for fresh one-offs pa, so the caterers are making about £140 gross profit a year out of each of you, and the the Taxman about £ 90, just for 3 cups a day. Ouch !

I remember eating in the canteen at Loughton when I was stationed there and drinking in the social club until youths burnt it down. The good old days when you could buy 'Griffin' food to take home for Mum to cook.

Cannot remember the prices, but they always had a special 'meal- each day at a set price. In the 90's they reduced the amount of portion of chips. I ordered some but refused to pay for the small amount I was served. This was soon changed after many complaints. Only had one upset in the canteen when I ordered a meal and decided to order a sweet after. I was told I should have ordered it before, resulting in me telling her where to stick her apple pie and walked out. Gone are the days using cups and mugs and in with the plastic cups, although free drinks when machines are working. At least years ago, you hads more selection of food to eat and then the best canteen was either Hainault or Ruislip depot. Leytonstone was ok but White City was the worse.

I've just found this thread as I begin to look back and see what I missed before I joined !
From my time with LT I would say this;
Best canteen on the combine was Alperton Bus garage, nice ambience and a proper full English brekky and plenty of seats and prompt service early in the morning! Best canteen at night was Liverpool St. bus canteen built in the old Queen Victoria tunnel. Egg teacake or beans on toast with fried eggs on top served by Mabel was first rate and filling. St.James Park aka 55, Broadway old canteen was popular but there were too many guvs about, however, when I could I used to enjoy lunch there and a pint or two in the bar afterwards! Earls Ct canteen was the first I ever encountered and one cooked meal there was enough to convince me to find a better eating house! Dominoes and gambling there went on 24/7 and I've known workmates to get paid at the pay point on a Thursday morning following night shift and play poker there until it was time to start the next shift and sometimes not going home for 72 hours or more! Baker Street was another popular canteen for gambling at night, many good games of poker were had there in the late 70s. As for the food it was variable but I spent more than a year working out of Baker St. so I eat a lot of canteen food there. Paddington Telstar House canteen was not bad but too busy at lunchtime so the choice was usually liquid lunch in the associated bar! Another office canteen which wasn't bad was Neuman St. near Tottenham Ct. Road where the LT computer centre used to be and another where I enjoyed the cuisine was the old LT Electrical offices at 15/17 Long Acre near Leicester Square both long gone now. Leytonstone was popular with engineering staff for brekky but it was far too busy and the seating was cramped. Oakwood depot with its enamelled tables was rough and basic, I remember the grease! Riverside bus canteen was good for brekky. Wood Green bus canteen was fine too but the underground canteen above the station did nice rolls for breakfast and also supplied the mini canteen at Arnos Grove. It was located on the left of the station entrance and comprised tea and coffee urns and prepacked rolls. There were a couple of chairs as I recall. Ashfield House at Lillie Bridge was okay as was Acton training school canteen. I was never keen on Acton staff canteen mostly because of all the train crew and especially their silly rivalry i.e. District v Picc! It is the only part of the Acton Town complex that is a District asset! I never liked Neasden canteen and the Northfields is no better than Lillie Bridge depot canteen, just machines. Barking was pleasant enough especially at weekends. I found Camden Town was okay for breakfast but Archway was a better canteen all round. The various canteens at Acton Works over the years were never my cup of tea! Of course in my last days on the job it was the machines at Ash House and Bollo House although Ash House was getting a proper canteen again as I recall but I never had a chance to see it.
I have to say that Griffin was good, I liked the LT Bakery products especially the big Griffin biscuits and the large teacakes and Griffin teabags made good tea. When Liverpool St. canteen went I mourned its passing, I was a regular there for the couple of years I worked out of Whitechapel depot in the 70s.

you got around a lot! Do I take it while the buses where LT you could, as a tube worker, roll up to any garage and make use of their canteen. A downside of deregulation and privatisation . That said my Mum can apparently (when traveling around the county while working - in education) stop off at a fire station canteen and request a meal. She's never tested the theory.

I got around a lot because I spent quite a few years installing telephones and other comms equipment not only on the railway but also in almost all the offices, substations and other facilities such as disused bus garages which were used as stores. Yes we could use any bus or rail canteen but it didn't necessarily stop completely when the buses were sold off. For instance at Alperton we had a training school in the old substation control room behind the garage and we were still able to use the bus canteen in the 1990s although as I recall one had to remember the 7-digit code for the coded access door! Hornchurch bus garage had a nice canteen. when we used to go to the Railway Training centre as apprentices we used to go to Sheppard's bush bus garage for a game of snooker and some real nice food When I first started at LTE there was such a thing as 'idle time' so we spent hours twiddling our thumbs at Whitechapel depot. To relieve the boredom we used to catch a bus to Hackney (Wells St.) garage for a game of snooker but the bus crews were not happy at outsiders using their table! Brian

I gathered from pals that there was a bus canteen at Acton Town, which they preferred? The only canteens I knew at Acton were the training centre canteen, the several incarnations of Acton Works canteens and the station canteen. Later came the messroom/canteen in Bollo House but that was all machines. I don't know about a bus canteen or where that would be located, I remember Acton Tram depot as empty and rather derelict before bus privatisation, the railway telephone section were offerred it as a stores but it was never used for that purpose. I wonder if it was the station canteen then? Is that the one looking down onto the WB District? I have only ever been in the Chiswick Works canteen, which was huge, and the Hounslow Garage canteen.
