Is it common for drivers to exchange a little wave or something as they pass? I noticed it on a few DEV's, but wondered if the operators were actually doing it for the cameras.

A bit OT, but is it 'naughty' for T/ops to do the national anthem on the whistle as they pass each other? As I’ve been on a Circle Line service before and it passed an EB District service, the Circle went woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo, then the District coming in the opposite direction went woo-woo to finish it off! ;D

In my time there was a complaint from the LTS drivers that District men never waved to them on passing. They did not know that we barely had time to see them let alone wave to them. However we did respond for one day and then they asked us if all the District men had gone mad as all they had seen all day was men waving all sorts of things at them through the cab window!!

That was the case in my day too. If greetings were exchanged it was usually a 'Churchill'

Are drivers allowed to blow the whistle whenever they want?

As my colleagues will confirm, I'm one of the mad people to drive with my cab light on (almost) all of the time, and I always wave at everyone! I usually get a wave from everyone, except for the Circle, although they'll often give me a 'pop' whistle as acknowledgement!

I have found that the response to waving depends quite a lot on who is doing the waving, and with what body part or parts. Especially if they are hairy.

However we did respond for one day and then they asked us if all the District men had gone mad as all they had seen all day was men waving all sorts of things at them through the cab window!! Q8 - We always waved at the LTSR drivers but they never waved back because they were too busy reading their newspapers relying heavily on the AWS to do their job for them - I sometimes wondered how they never had a major incident, apart from the East Ham incident in 95 I think it was when a 12 car slam door came out of East Ham depot at a rather frightening speed and derailed the whole lot, the marks and dents of which you can see on the bridge over the Barking creek on the Down road.

Oh yeah they were always reading something or other when I saw them too. I have been told that they so relied on the AWS that on occasions that they engaged in other (unspecified) pastimes too.
