The Network Rail page says the project is from 2017 to 2019, that gives it a couple of years.

In case anyone is interested I have taken a few snaps around T Hale of the STAR alignment to show current state of play. I hope to add other locations in due course. Blatant plug time ----> Flickr STAR album

Used the line between Tottenham Hale and Stratford on Saturday. There is a fair amount of activity right along the section. Work is ongoing to clear and flatten the alignment. Hard packing is being installed to give a level base for the ballast and tracks. A bridge has been removed near Coppermill Lane - presumably to be replaced with a new asset. Another bridge further north is being refurbished and had waterproofing material being installed (I think). The electrification mast bases have been installed at Tottenham Hale and part of the main building structure and side wall to the s/b platform has been removed. Other bits of concrete pouring are also happening. After many months of sparse activity there is now a more concentrated level of work in several locations.

43 minutes to Heathrow? Am I missing something?

43 minutes to Heathrow? Am I missing something? That looks like the journey time to Stansted. They show 24 minutes from Meridian Water to LSt, and Crossrail's Journey Planner shows 33 minutes from there to Heathrow, making 57 minutes, without allowing any connection time. (via Stratford is 17 + 43 = 60)

I don't think it would be so impossible. 5 mins to Tottenham Hale. 10 mins on Victoria to Kings X. 10 mins on Circle to Paddington. 15 mins on Heathrow Express.

If you teleported, no problem. If you sprinted at each station add on another 15 mins max to the total journey. *mumble**mumble*

Just a very small update. Went past Tottenham Hale today and the alignment to the south has now been completely flattened and widened. It was previously piled high with earth but it has all gone. The work area is now sealed off from the existing tracks. At a wild guess, given the width, I am wondering if this section may actually have two tracks added to allow trains to pass here but reverting to single track within Tottenham Hale station and to the south under the bridge where the GOBLIN crosses. A large crane was also evident to the south and that might be replacing life expired bridges which carry the tracks over paths / roads that go under the alignment.

Snoggle It used to be a two track alignment for the Temple Mills freight from Picketts Lock Junction up to Coppermill Jnctn (IIRC) Sure - what I have not been able to track down is a track plan for what STAR will now deliver. I have seen various options from 2 years ago and financial pressures had caused all of the more elaborate options to be discounted. I remain of the view that some sort of passing loop is needed on the route and (near) T Hale would seem to be the sensible place to provide one. It's just a shame that the meeting papers that discussed STAR have been removed from the City Hall website and that the entire governance structure has changed with no papers being released. So much for transparency.

Do you expect the current works to make enough paths for the full use predicted from Meridan Water housing?

Do you expect the current works to make enough paths for the full use predicted from Meridan Water housing? Yes and no! The train service has been specced by the DfT in the Gtr Anglia franchise. They have not specced a strict x15 min headway for the service because it will be provided by both a shuttle service and trains on the main line that head to Stratford. Pathing in the peaks on the main line is very tight so DfT have allowed Abellio (as the franchisee) to be able to "flex" the headways away from a pure 4 tph regular interval headway. Clearly the extra track will be capable of providing a x30 headway all stns from Meridian Water to Stratford. The stoppers on the mainline have to fill the gap. Despite a massive amount of lobbying from Stansted Airport and Essex / Cambs more generally there is no sign that the DfT are going to upgrade the WAML to 4 tracks north of Coppermill Junction. They are going to wait for TfL to have to find most of the money with CR2! In terms of the future of Meridian Water then all we know is that the new alignment is designed to allow an extra track to be added and extra platforms at Northumberland Park, Meridian Water and Tottenham Hale (they're all getting just 1 extra platform at this stage but are designed to have a fourth added in future). What is much less clear (to me) is how a full 4 track alignment would work and how the tracks would be paired / arranged. Would it be "fast fast local local" or "local fast fast local" - that has ramifications for what work would be needed to build Crossrail 2 (if it happens). Given the recent withdrawal of one of the developers of Meridian Water I suspect we may be a long way away from that site reaching its full potential so the need for extra tracks and platforms may be 10-15 years away, possibly longer.

Long term I would imagine that GA would cease to serve all stations between Tottenham Hale and Cheshunt / Broxbourne / wherever CR2 ends. With CR2 potentially providing in the vicinity of 12tph there really is no need at all for GA stops at intermediate stations. Platforms would probably be retained in case of engineering works or emergency train evacuation (as they are at the likes of Norbury, Wandsworth Common, Ilford, Southall etc) but the GA pair would effectively become the 'fast' lines.

do you know if that bridge is wide enough to eventually accommodate a fourth track? (hard to tell watching the video?)

do you know if that bridge is wide enough to eventually accommodate a fourth track? (hard to tell watching the video?) I believe all the works are being designed to allow an extra track to be added. That certainly applies at the stations and north of T Hale. South of T Hale is a little more involved because of what CR2 may involve. However the basic worksite areas, including the bridges that are being replaced, all look wide enough for 2 tracks - based on observations from passing trains. Unfortunately there are not many footbridges across the alignment where a more considered view could be taken.

My information from Network Rail is that the new third track will start just north of Lea Bridge station and proceed north via Tottenham Hale all the way up to the new Meridian Water station. Just south of Tottenham Hale provision will be made for the future CR2 tunnel portal and space for a second track to proceed north. The intention is that CR2 will necessitate a second track and that such double tracking will extend as far as Broxbourne. CR2 will provide the all stations service on the existing tracks to Hertford East and the new second pair of tracks will be used by fast GA services and StanEx services.

That would leave Clapton as the only station only on the fast tracks. From the junction not named on Carto north of Hackney Downs to a crossrail built junction just before Tottenham Hale they may have to merge the fast and slow services.

From the junction not named on Carto north of Hackney Downs to a crossrail built junction just before Tottenham Hale they may have to merge the fast and slow services. Clapton is not on any fast tracks. Its double track only from Hackney Downs north junction all the way via Clapton station to Clapton Junction just beyond Clapton Station. These two tracks are heavily used by GA and StanEx services who don't call at Clapton. Clapton is only served by London Overground Services to Chingford. At Clapton Junction a pair of tracks diverge left and descend down to join the Lea Valley line at Coppermill Junction. The new third track will already be there to the east of the existing two track lea Vally line formation on the restored trackbed of long lifted freight lines. It's to the north of this point (just before reaching Tottenham Hale) that provision will be made for a CR2 portal and an eventual fourth track.

Noticed today that stone "foundations" are being put in for the new track to the south of T Hale. What I thought was a flat wide alignment has been shovelled up again with a long hump of earth beside Ferry Lane estate and a flatter single track alignment beside the existing WAML tracks. It doesn't look like proper ballast at this stage. I'll try to get some photos this week.
There was a large drilling machine at T Hale Station today digging out what I assume will be foundations for the new LU ticket hall structure.

do you know if that bridge is wide enough to eventually accommodate a fourth track? (hard to tell watching the video?) It definitely does have space for two tracks. See this latest video from Geoff Marshall which covers Meridian Water station, shows a future track plan for the third track and also visits the site of the new replacement bridge south of T Hale.

An update:
Track now laid between Lea Bridge and almost Tottenham Hale. This is not yet connected to mainline, although I suspect this will be done last.
Most of the ballast has been laid where the rest of the track will go
The station rebuilds or new stations look some way from completion
It’s quite exciting seeing the track down.
Go and have a look!
