Was once on a fast, non-stop to Cambridge which 'called' at Welwyn Garden City - for about 2 hours. It took that long to coral the horse, apparently... And I've been on fast non-stop Cambridge to London Kings Cross services that called at the 'wrong' platform at Royston as well. I've been a slow to Cambridge that pulled into the southbound platform at Royston to let the King's Lynn train overtake. Our train was running 15 mins late so whoever was near should have been surprised at two northbound trains going through both platforms

When I was little my mum worked one Saturday in four, so my dad had to look after my brother and I. One of my dad's mates was in a similar situation, so they got a family railcard and once a month we would all head out. Relevant to this thread is arranging for a train from Blackpool to stop at our local station of Bramley (normally skipped by Blackpool trains) simply so that we could alight. The fact that we'd had a cab ride and then driver had been demonstrating how the unit could exceed the posted Max speed is nothing at all to do with his desire to loose a minute or too!

The train person in me waited for a class 379 from Hackney Downs to White Hart Lane as there are works on the Tottenham Hale line and Greater Anglia trains are terminating at Cheshunt. Trains are stopping at WHL for football (also my reason). 379 = Stansted Express

I long ago gave up trying to find any logic in the numbering system, but Class 397 is the number allocated to the new trains for TransPennine, due next year. You would certainly have a long wait for one of those at Hackney Downs!

A "fast" train from Marylebone, scheduled for Birmingham, stopped at Sudbury Hill Harrow, after one of the local trains was cancelled. That is the only unusual national rail stop for me.

May I respectfully point out that Lymstone Commando is not an Army Camp or is it a stop for soldiers. Royal Marine Commandos are not soldiers but part of the Royal Navy. I hope you never meet a Royal Marine and call him a soldier.

MerseyTart visited both, and was subsequently escorted off the premises.

Stanlow is easy enough to visit as it's possible to alight from a train and then board the next which is about half an hour later. I did this a few years ago, including taking copious photos, and didn't get any hassle. Likewise Lympstone Commando is no problem to alight and then board a later train, although one is wise to speak to the camp security first. Redcar British Steel is more of a problem. One can visit between trains but this means being there for about 8 hours. There is also the obvious problem of what to do if the train doesn't turn up for any reason. This is the only one of the three I haven't visited.

I alighted at the disused N R southbound platform at East Putney from a special from Clapham junction to Wimbledon (by arrangement with the driver) as I had left my car parked at the late John Smith's (Lens of Sutton) house in Keswick Road.

As I alluded to in the recent thread about visiting every tube station you have to use the station for its intended purpose, a journey. Around 1965, on a Saturday afternoon, I was on an all stations Slough to Paddington with a ticket to Hanwell, (yes GH, then actually Hanwell & Elthorne), when approaching Southall, we were switched to the fast lines. We stopped in Southall station on the fast platform and I could see a broken down "Warship Class" parked in the slow platform.
I expected that after Southall, we would be switched back to the relief line, but no, we stayed on the fast and stopped at Hanwell at the long closed London bound fast. I was the only person to disembark, but even Hanwell (& E) was staffed on Saturday afternoons in those days, and someone was there on the platform to collect my ticket and to assist a very elderly lady on to the train which even for somebody of her age, was probably the only time she ever used that platform.
