Does anyone know why the Circle Line is shaped like a bottle lying on its side (at least on Harry Beck's map)? I have always wondered this.

Whilst it is a diagram of lines rather than a map it does reflect geography to some extent.
The north south distance at the eastern end than the west.
Before Thameslnk reopened it was usually quicker to walk from Farringdon to Blackfriars than go round on the Circle.

As it is between Queensway & Bayswater stations, or the Bank to Mansion House as well

No need to apologise. Because Harry Becks map is 'schematic' it doesn't show real distances between stations. Apart from the two instance I've mentioned, imagine travelling from Leicester Sq to Covent Garden. If two people started at the entrance to Leicester Sq, one by train the other walking up Long Acre, no prizes for who would get to Covent Garden first.

Conversely, walking between Chalfont and Chesham would be quite a trek. The reason the Circle is depicted as bottle shaped is because there is far more to cram inside it at the western end than in the east. In fact the Circle Line is in fact rather a more elongated bottle-shape than the Tube map shows it - more wine bottle than milk bottle.
