I've done a bit of 'blue-sky thinking' on the issue and I think that maybe a half-hearted measure to ensure some semblance of survival might be to procure some Parry PPM100s and try running 4tph service if possible (maybe 6tph in peaks). The operating costs would be brought down, so Mr Osborne will be happy, there'd only be a minimal loss in capacity, so the commuter should be fairly happy, and it cuts carbon emissions, so Boris is happy.

It seems that the Greenford branch is snookered at both end - it can't go beyond Greenford and it's being shoved into a siding at West Ealing. I believe it should, at least, go to Ealing Broadway (like it used to).

If platforms could be rebuilt at Greenford on the NNML, then maybe Chiltern could do something with it - West Ruislip to West Ealing shuttle?
In the 70s, LT allegedly looked at projecting the District via West Ealing, Greenford, Ruislip Gardens, and Ickenham to Uxbridge to serve an NEC at Ickenham. However, then NEC was eventually built in Birmingham so nothing came of the plan.

The other thing is the timing. If say the Greenford to West Ealing service is every 20 minutes and the Crossrail service from West Ealing is every 15 minutes then obviously there's going to be a mismatch (as most people on the Greenford branch will not be wanting West Ealing to be their final destination).

There will be cross platform interchange towards Paddington. There is only a 30 minute service at the moment.

The latest (2012-13) passenger figures show around 305,000 annual passenger entries/exits combined at the three branch stations. For what that's worth? I suspect those figures may not be the most accurate; it depends what they are based on. If it's ticket sales or oyster touch-ins, I'd suggest it could be a bit on the low side. When I lived in Greenford, on those rare occasions I used the branch I most commonly used South Greenford. No ticket office, no ticket machine, just an oyster reader and I didn't have an oyster card (well, not a suitable one anyway). More often than not I was unable to purchase a ticket, I don't think I was the only one either.

Many people forget that the Central Line platforms are at a different grade to the old GWR ones True, but the shuttle emerges between the Central tracks, and at the same level. Same level...ish. The bay is probably some 12-18" lower than the Central and approaches the station on a (quite steeply) rising gradient, the Central approaches on a steeply falling gradient. To provide any form of connection would need the two rail levels to be more or less equal, which would end up being somewhere in the existing platform area.

Rail statistics. Office of Rail Regulation. Please note: Some methodology may vary year on year.Unfortunately, we'll have to ask them, but I'd hope they keep records of excess fares paid at Paddington etc as well in collating them.
