Probably the most comprehensive PIS fitted to a train in the world. Full colour LCD screens above every doorway showing all the info you could ever want from: How long it takes to reach any station on the route from where you are to where the lifts, escalators and stairs are at every platform. It's fully translated over to English as well as Japanese and swaps between the two so it's all fairly self explanatory! Case proven me thinks ! XF If this Evo thing goes ahead and Hitachi win it they could very easily have these fitted.

The new Thameslink fleet with have those type screens with video from company HQ able to be displayed just as easily. Think of the advantages it bring, for example getting an update that a Tube line is affected meaning you can re-route prior to hitting the affects Tube line. Note with Thameslink, the screens will be able to be updated as it passes stations so no reason why LU, can't introduce them.

I was thinking the other day that those projected advert screens could be used to show travel updates to complement the audio announcements.

I was thinking about using the existing facilities on the stations, rather than new equipment.

Here I am typing this out on my energy efficient and very clear iPad thinking this is a no brainier the paper map is dead long live the paper map. Run your iPad for 20 hours a day for 10 years, and see if it remains clear and reliable.

I made a mockup of what it may look like IMO Big Image, LinkyParts of the map: - Greyed out part represents part(s) the train has been.
- Faded part (for branches) indicate destination and where to change for those stations
- Red bit... Well...

Yeah, nice. But, because the service is linear, there isn't a need for all of the bends and twists, indeed, nor a need to show where the train has been, but the way in which you showed how to get onto the other lines, is rather clever, I could be really useful on something like the District line with the Wimblewares or the Northern line, with the 2 branches in the city and 2 branches in the north

Red bit.... Well..... The next station? Two shades of grey /50Anyway, that's a good idea. I did think about that sort of solution for the fictional "Standard Tube Stock/Cl 496" in-car diagrams for the massive Piccadilly line in my fictional novel (who'd like Bedford-Kingston?!) There, and also probably the Met, you'd need to see where you've been/going to due to semi/fast sections. Grey out the stations not served by the train. I know some may actually need where the train has been, so leave that there just in case. This on a screen would be perfect for stock on multiple lines - to denote one line, without the need to display all the lines' line diagrams... (note S7 Stock!)

Well, they are far better than the little scrolling DMIs that they do have. If only this actually went into production. As for the 2009TS line maps, In combination with this, they could have just made the line out of LEDS, and had them light up or scroll to indicate location and direction, which is cheaper than the suggestions made here ( Larger Version) Here is a (Very low quality!) version of the Victoria Line Map put into LED form. Assuming the train in metrailway's photo is heading southbound, the LEDs between Finsbury Park and King's Cross Light up and "scroll" to indicate the direction of travel. The LEDS for the stations either side light up as well, and step free access is indicated by the darker blue LEDs.

Not sure if anyone has noticed that there is a major drive to cut costs on the Underground at the moment.
The existing maps are simple and contain whole words. They are easy to maintain and update.
Displays that don't show complete line names, lack colour contrasts and have significant maintenance costs are hardly the way forward.

Slightly off topic, but are the maps made from recycled paper? I hate to think seeing a forest the size of Newham (I think) being cut down to make an updated edition of the Victoria Line map... On topic, I got bored and made a mockup of a map display on S(?) stock. and a separate screen for service updates (kinda based on the one from earlier...)

I like the "so far" bit lol, @jammz overlooks typo...
To be pedantic, the branches face North/east of the Main Line, except Uxbridge branch, ironically... Thus the lines are pointing in the wrong direction. And en-route, different line interchanges are not shown, which people do need! (i.e. NR at Amersham, but then again negated that Chiltern does serve HOTH...)
The screen could look like that for just the plain S Stock in general, so that way, there is no need for separate line diagrams for each HC/Circ, Dist and Met.... Then again, screen burn if the display is the same for a long time...
And where did you get "the size of Newham" from? To be honest, my school does cut down the size of the school's worth of forest just for photocopying.

The interchanges are shown on the info screen to the right. True, I may need to add NR symbols but Underground interchanges were omitted to save space at certain parts of the map (i.e. Wembley to Aldgate. And where did you get "the size of Newham" from? Add on the amount of maps on every train (no. of carriages (times) 6 or 8) Multiply that by 11 That's how many maps there are approx. on the network (I think).

The in-car DLR text-to-speech system used to specify C2C at Custom House but in recent years they've altered it to say National Rail services in spite of there being no change in operator. In situations where text-to-speech is used, it makes sense to specify the TOC as it can easily be updated in conjunction with franchise changes. I'm assuming they changed it to National Rail in keeping with what other TfL services do.

You don't need that much wood... A lot of paper can be taken from one tree! About 250-300 line maps + the extra tube maps... They can't be recycled, but may have had recycled paper to make it from...
