I came across this article which shows Beck's prototypes for the Paris Métro, which was rejected.* I'd already linked to the article before Chris M started a new thread about it below. I've therefore taken my original post and merged it into this thread.[/font]

I'm sure I've seen the map in print well before the 2008 date quoted in the article (tho' I can't remember where at the moment). Two immediate points of interest: one, given the discussion elsewhere about the range of available colours, is the number of separate colours used for the 13 1/2 lines that the Metro then had; two, compared with London, the individual lines in Paris often follow quite tortuous routes (eg the 4 and the 8 for example), but Beck quite brilliantly brings some order to the whole thing.

Colours are in fact repeated more than is necessary (assuming they haven't merged through fading) yet there seems to be no confusion because the repeats are where you can see the lines are separate.
The depiction of the Seine, and the rectangular box are quite amazing.

There is a similar map published in the appendix of Mr Beck's underground map, however this doesn't show the Seine in it. Seemingly he worked on Paris from the late 1930s to early 1950s without convincing the authorities.

<<Rincew1nd: For future info gang, there is an option to delete your own posts entirely, it's up at the top right of each of your own posts. I'd suggest that if your post has only been in existance for a short duration you just hit that rather editing as above. Editing as above is a good choice though if your post has been around a little while or has been replied to.>>
