The unions protested at some stations today. The TUC claim that "Beeching-style tactics to slim down local services in a bid to make short-term savings" are being employed and that "Rail firms seem intent on resurrecting the ghost of Dr Beeching, by embarking upon a new era of swingeing railway cuts" Maybe no one has informed the TUC of the various plans announced recently by Network Rail/Government to invest in railways... I've found this site which provides a glimpse of the thoughts of the railway press in 1963: www.york.ac.uk/inst/irs/irshome/features/readings/archive/beeching.htm" A notable comment comes from the last GM of Southern Railway, Sir John Elliot, who said, " Britain after Beeching will be a better place for transport than Britain before Beeching".

Most of the stations on the North London Line and GOBLIN are in the list of those that were to close but surprisingly perhaps not the South London line.

Ian Hislop's look at Beeching this evening on BBC4 was of very high-quality and very enjoyable. It was also balanced, from what I could see. It'll be on iPlayer shortly here . Anyone abroad, it's certainly doable, but if not, send me a PM.

MMVIII Not that the programme was any less relevant...

T'was excellent - watched from beginning to end. I don't have quite as much interest in national rail as London transport. but the Beeching debacle/phenomena/saving-of-the-railways/vandalism/foresight/brilliance/disaster/shortsightedness etc, is always fascinating (especially as I lived in East Grinstead for a few years). And the multitude of government ministers seriously giving credence to asphalting over existing lines to make 'convenient and flexible 4 lane carriageways for people in their cars' made me smile and sob in equal measure (although this has actually happened in many places I think)...maybe we could do that with the Circle Line? And..(and)...the constant references to whether or not the 'tax payer' or the 'service users' ought to be paying for rail services. Are they not the same people then??? V. v. interesting.
