I'm hoping one of our experts will know the definitive answer to this one...
On Easter Monday (1st April), we plan to take our kids to the Science Museum. Thanks to the various upgrade projects, we will leave the car at Cockfosters. We will then get the Picc. to Gloucester Road and a no.49 bus to South Ken. This is because my daughter, who is Autistic, cannot use escalators. My question is, what ticket do I need for the kids (they are aged 8), to use the tube and bus. I have a PAYG Oyster, though my wife has nothing.
When we had to get to Whitechapel to visit a relative who was in the Royal London Hospital, we went from Finchley Central. We were not charged for the kids and they were given no tickets by the staff at Finchley Central. BTW, this was when we found that our daughter was terrified of the deep escalators.
Thanks in advance,
DavidH

Children under 10 go free on the buses, and also on the Underground if they are with an adult (or have a photocard) www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14554.aspxGloucester Road is only about 800 yards from the Scence Museum - is it really worth using the bus? (South kansington is itself about 300 yards from the museum) I'm not usre if the access between the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum is still open, but if it is, that would shorten the walk even more

If you want to avoid the UndergrounD, you could drive to New Barnet (or other stations on the ECML) and take the train to King's Cross. From King's Cross take the No. 10 bus which stops outside the Royal Albert Hall. 5 to 10 minute walk to the Science Museum. No free travel for under 10s on the Mainline though; Child Return to King's Cross is £2.

Thanks, Metrailway I think we'll stick to the original plan to use CFS, as it has a large (and cheap) car park. OK - more questions... Circle Line on bank holiday monday is shown to be running from Gloucester Road to Aldgate. Can anyone 'in the know' confirm that the service is running along the northern part of the Circle between these points? King's Cross/ St. Pancras Does this station now have lifts between the Picc platforms and the Circle/ H&C platforms? Many thanks, David

So is the Circle departing from the eastbound platform via the wrong road starter? Haven't done that before so it may well be one to 'bash'.

Yes lift C is 1 of 4 lifts between street and ticket hall, take lift A down, enter the gateline opposite, take lift (I think) H down to the interchange passageway then turn left then take the first lift on the right (can't remember what letter it is) down to the pltform.

These links might help londonist.com/2011/01/the-complex-lifts-of-kings-cross-st-pancras.phpAny of Lifts A to E, then Lift H, then Lift J www.describe-online.com/lul/kingscross/lifts.htmwww.networkrail.co.uk/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=30064780921 - this appears to have been written before the new western concourse opened From the description, I think Lift "C" is now located in the angle between Platforms 8 and 9, accessible from the new western concourse, but any lift from street level will take you to the ticket hall level Platform 9 3/4 has moved again (well, it is supposed to be magic) and is now in the new western concourse, under the bridge that leads from the mezzanine level onto the bridge that spans platforms 1 to 8

Lift C is located in the old park of the main line station which is now a building site, the lift will re-open when the work is done

To get to Exhibition Road from Gloucester Road Stn, turn left out the station, right at the traffic lights, then go along Cromwell Road until you reach Exhibition Road (2nd on the left) - 10 minute walk. And probably much quieter than South Ken during the school holidays!

If you want to stay completely on the tube and avoid escalators, go Cockfosters to Barons Court (stay at the rear of the Piccadilly line train), up the stairs at Barons Court and cross to the eastbound platform. Then catch a District line train to South Kensington.
Admittedly, you'll be going past South Ken on the Piccadilly, but it's only a few stops.

Why not just walk up the stairs via the District Line platforms at South Kensington? I thought the original post was to get a reasonably step-free route?

Thanks to all who offered advice. Our day went without a hitch.
On a personal level, I enjoyed the chance to scratch the eastbound - westbound crossover at Gloucester Road, plus the added bonus of taking a C-stock into the bay at Aldgate.
