Good photos from the MTA. Some of the work, both 2nd Av Subway and East Side access, has been featured on Extreme Engineering on one of the Discovery channels. They have to either drill by hand or use dynamite to blast the extremely hard rock which New York is built on. The rebuild of South Ferry subway terminal has also featured.

As the article says, this is to accommodate an extension to the Long Island Rail Road commuter trains into Manhattan as well as subway trains.

I knew they were doing the 7 line extension and the new 2nd Ave line, but had not seen any pictures. These are some great shots - thanks for sharing the link. An awesome subway they have there. Ridden parts of it many times in the past.
