I just got off an Overground station and I discovered a modern Underground status board that had a software update dialog message and the Windows XP taskbar over it. The taskbar also seems to suggest that the status update screen might be an full-screen internet page on a Internet Explorer window, using a page from the usual TfL website. So, does this mean that the widely used interface for the status update boards was actually a website page all along?

Sounds a bit like my old local NatWest cash machine; it ran Windows XP.

Airport screens were also running windows - figured that one when one of them got a Blue Screen of Death.
And if it was a real web page, is there a link to that, or is it for internal use only?

I think you are right. I have seen this before at South Kensington - it seems LU use Windows for all their computers. There was a thread I started a while back about "Windows" on the tube... But I guess my thoughts shall be saved for a time and place. I have however, tried to access this web page at home, but it isn't possible. I noted down a web address shown on a monitor for tube updates. IIRC it took the form 10.98.11.xx/stationame/random letters but nothing seemed to work

AFAIK it feeds from the LU Intranet rather than an external web site.

10.x.x.x IP addresses are for private networks only. However, on this occasion it appears to come from tfl.gov.uk

Unfortunately, that means nothing... just because it's on a tfl.gov.uk domain does not mean that it's publicly accessible. It is perfectly possible, and feasible that *.tfl.gov.uk resolves through DNS to completely different IP addresses internally and externally. =

.tfl seems mostly to be used within TfL, but that certainly doesn't mean that no other domain names are
