Why does the caption have a nonsensical date?

I cannot see it is a "nonsensical" date. It is the correct date October 17 2000 somehow written in the American style

I understand that some Americans are now informally switching to the UK style of date format.
Hatfield was another nasty disaster that shouldn't have happened. I know lessons were learned, I just hope they aren't forgotten.

It's pretty idiotic to post things with a foreign date format that will in many circumstances cause it to be misinterpreted and in the remainder will yield a nonsensical date.

Eleven. ... happened in the USA - and the significance of the number is all the greater because it is also the emergency services phone number over there - equivalent to our 112 or 999. Vive la difference: but if writing for an American audience I would respect their conventions and avoid British idiom and spelling, to avoid appearing either ignorant or arrogant. oh, and to avoid any question of date confusion, I always spell the month out.

I rather think the nitpickers and pedants have missed the whole point of the post. Are people reading posts to learn or to offer guidance to others - or simply find something to complain about? Sorry mrfs42 - this is not a friendly forum. A genuine question about Regent's Park Station met with incredible hostility and insults.

I rather think the nitpickers and pedants have missed the whole point of the post. Sadly that is what happens when people become distracted by things such as nonsensical (in context) date formats or other peculiarities. Whereas one should have been thinking of the victims the nonsense date was the thing that stood out.

Maybe people should learn to be a little less easily distracted. I find it extremely sad to read this kind of pedantry on a thread started in good faith as a memorial to the dead in that terrible accident.
