... abolished the train operator grade and rehired train operators as self-employed contractors at a lower rate of pay, less holidays and no staff travel. Self employed train operators would be responsible for arrangng their own National Insurance and Income Tax

There would probably be a long strike and then a court case.

London would come to a standstill for a certain small amount of time before the government sacked the TfL board and appointed a new lot who would rapidly reverse the decision.

If they abolished the TOp grade they'd either have to offer us redundancy packages or they'd have to redeploy us to other existing grades at the same salary. Half of the TOps would probably take the money and run and as most of the IOps have been here donkeys and would get the biggest pay offs there would be very few people to train up the replacements. We'd probably get by with opening around 7am, closing around 11pm and a train every half hour in the off peak and at weekends. We might have to close on Sundays.
Class413 - the governemnt don't appoint the TfL board, the Mayor does. The Mayor is also the TfL chairman.

If you are self employed you cannot work on just one contract without upsetting HMRC.
