In creating a UK rail route for MSTS, even if you have no experience, we can all blitz it together and experiment with out-comes, I have been inspired by DrJimi to create a route, whether it is a LU route, UK network route or other steam/ ffestinog railway is upto you. Experienced or not I would to test out new things with you. And who knows? we may end creating something beautiful.
(Thanks to Q8 for supplying me with the game, I really appreciate it)

I'm intrested, but have no experience at all. The closet i've come to route building is editing activities and when i looked into building routes it seemed very hard. But like you say, if we pull together we may create "something beautiful".

Hey DS / Chris,
I'd like to help out but I'm not sure how much time I'm going to be able to contribute as I'm about to start the final year of my degree. I've had a bit of a dabble with the route editor and (kinda) get the hang of laying tracks, but thats about it.

I have plenty of time. I have 10 weeks summer holiday so will be able to experiment lots.

Do any LU train models already exist for MSTS? I believe they would have to be created with a 3D modelling program such as Maya, which would take a long time.
It might be worth considering a BVE route instead of / in addition to MSTS as the fixed view simplifies things, and the routes are much easier to edit once you get the hang of the "programming language" which is used. It's also more likely that we could ask to use scenery which other people have created (with permission).
If we want to do a real world route, reasonably detailed plans of it would also be useful.

Don't forget that Train Sim is no longer being developed by Microsoft.

I tell you what, how do you feel about being the director of the BVE team? you can make your own route on BVE and you can be in charge. I would like to manage the MSTS though.

I tell you what, how do you feel about being the director of the BVE team? Alas, I currently have a "real" job, and am, like waland, going to be entering the final year of my degree in the Autumn. So I doubt I'll have that much spare time available.

Not a placement year (Cambridge don't do those), but a summer internship at a software company near Cambridge between my second and final year.
As you've probably guessed, I'm studying Computer Science (which is always called compsci around here).

compsci - that's fine, If I find a manager for the BVE route it will definatley go up and you can obviously take part. Christopher Jolly -I'd love to give it a new home but I can't help but feel I'm scrounging off everyone here. I mean I do treasure the things people send me and I make good use of them but I can't help but feel like I'm scrounging. Of course if you want to send it, I would love it thanks For any new-comers like myself to MSTS who want to take part --- Don't worry about not even entering editor before, I and hopefully other members will help you along your way, we will make this route with everyone involved, it's not a case of 'oh well he's a bit rubbish let's kick him from the team'..the key to this project working is patience on everyone's behalf. As for timewasters who think it's okay to spend years on their part of the layout and just really prat us about, I won't take it as I want things to run smoothly with everyone. If you do timewaste and/or start being abusive, you WILL be kicked from the team + project. I also will be setting up a basic site to use which will basically mean everyone can access change/modify and upload their part of the layout so we can all download and add on things and such.

When I say timewaste, I mean when they take literally forever to complete, I won't be rushing everyone, just the extremem I call timewasting, so don't worry

Chris also raised a very good point in a PM with the layout side of things.
He was thinking of like a mainline (or fast line if you will) and slower more country lines at the side (twisty windy railways) my take on this would to be have constant stations on the slower lines with like little villages and maybe minor towns. Traditonal country stations like.
On the mainline I was thinking of having the stations a bit more spread and make them into major stations (take Birmingham, Kings X or Leeds) and have them parted quite a fair bit.
Then at the end we could come to a major station where country tracks and mainline tracks meet in one very large station and have maybe 1 or 2 depots dotted around the 'rail crossings' on the approach to the station.
Also we will need to sort out which stock, liviries and if freight or passenger are running. I'm sure someone who joins up has the skills to make 'station signposts' match the stock running. If not we will have to experiment and see what's best.
As for freight however, if we ran this type of train it would make the layout considerably bigger with Depots and 'side stations' for the trains to load/unload the products.
Have a think about it chaps and PM me or get back to us in this thread and tell us your views.

I'd say that a "fictional" route as suggested is probably the best place to start as it saves worrying about getting item X in exactly the right place etc., and allows yus to focus more on how to build a route in the first place.
I've got no problem with an MSTS route, I was just pointing out that there are some bits which are considerably more complicated, which are all a result of it being proper 3D.

Update: I have Pm'ed all the members interested about a map I am creating which is the LU map, but with my own routes and own station names. Of course, any railway doesnt go in 'straight lines' so don't worry if you are a bit out to the map, I will make different sizes, so you can print it out for when you are putting the layout together, Luke.
