Disused train tunnel collapses in Liverpool. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-18971316Is this tunnel part of the Liverpool Overhead Railway? That would be a fantastic piece of infrastructure to have put back into operation, what with the regeneration of the docklands and everything. Although I understand there isn't much of it left!

It says it's part of the LOR if you read your clip!!! As so often happens, the news article has been edited since I posted my message. As, indeed, has the Wikipedia article on the LOR. Always happens to me, that does.

Indeed, it is the car garage section that has collapsed, leading to the closure if one the main arterial roads above it.

In the views shown it doesn't look as if very much basic maintainence has been done, still thats probably par for the course in Liverpool.

It was probably due to the wet weather we had recently. Liverpool is built on a sandstone bedrock, the sandstone is similar to the cliff that collapsed in Dorset with tragic results.

Not forgetting the short road tunnel in Dorset that collapsed last week onto a car with two people loosing their lives.

My oh my, they should rebuild the LOR, and LU should try palming-off some D78s on them.

If they ever rebuilt the LOR or even if it had survived to the present day it would most likely be more like the DLR rather than 'Heavy Rail'. Had a bit more forethought been applied it might still be operating.

Yes, I suppose. It was the corrosion of the supports and the lack of funds which forced it to close in the end.

Liverpool City Council were asked to take it over but they declined as it competed with some of their bus routes.

There is a lovely and informative section of the new museum of Liverpool dedicated to the overhead railway. Well worth a visit if you are up that way

There is a lovely and informative section of the new museum of Liverpool dedicated to the overhead railway. Well worth a visit if you are up that way +1 You can stand on the ground next to the Titfield Thunderbolt and look up at an Overhead Railway train. If you climb the stairs you can board an original Overhead Railway car and sit on the wooden seats pretending you're rattling along above Herculaneum Dock. And it's all free.

An overhead railway in a tunnel ummm! Well how much of the "UndergrounD" is under-ground and how much is above-ground? And then you have the situation at Whitechapel - where it goes over the Overground
