The company my Dad work's for were one of the first to move into the Canary Wharf development many years ago - I still remember going to work with him, and the electronic display on the DLR platform at Stratford was showing "Welcome Texaco to Canary Wharf". Now the whole area is completly developed and there are many companies etc. - it show's how much development has happened and how important the DLR was.

*BUT*, LDDC never thought that the DLR would take off, quite the way it has done... a real success story!
Happy Birthday to *MY* DLR, and to my local station, especially.

How many of the gracious Members of this Forum were on that first train from Poplar to Island Gardens and still have the DLR medal as a souvenir ? (add me to the list when you make it!)

I was on that first train as well, I have the medal at home somewhere. A friend and I also managed to slip aboard a few trains the week before, when they had an open day for staff.

I only managed the first week. Saying that I used to travel on it monthly until recently and watched the DLR and the area grow and develop.

Nice photostream DavidH!
I remember going through Canary Wharf station when they were re-building it. It has done very well for itself!

Those '86 cars are still doing well in Messe Gruga! With a conventional cab, of course!

Can anyone confirm the actual date that the DLR was 20? We organised a 20th birthday challenge on the TC Forum on the 31st July, because according to some web sites the DLR was officially opened by the Queen on 31st July 1987. However it appears that the correct date is 31st August 1987. Can anyone confirm which of these dates is correct?

The opening post in this thread, coupled with this page from Wikipedia (which whilst not always right, but is usually generally close enough) would suggest that the August 31st date is indeed the correct one. EDIT: Welcome to the forum BTW!!

Hmmm I can't say that I'm convinced. I reckon the Queen officially opened 1 month before services commenced on 31st August. I wonder if Liz would remember what day she opened the DLR? Also wonder if she has ever been on the DLR again since the opening day.

The offical opening date of the DLR is the 31 August 1987. Thats from DLR themselves.
The July was the Royal openning but the system wasn't up and running then. After the Queen left the system was shut down to be completed.
