Why is it that the MFM and card-only Oyster machines don't tell you whether or not you've capped your Oyster at a particular ticket?
For example, if I were to make enough journeys to reach the price cap for a Z1-4 ODTC, why doesn't the machine tell me that when I check my PAYG balance?

Not really necessary IMHO. You can tell when your card has capped as the POD will display 0.00 as the amount deducted when you touch out at the end of your journey, and the actual capping rates are available in the fares leaflet (and also online here).

Yeah, but it doesn't tell you which ticket you've capped at. If you're low on PAYG and you go outside the cap you may get a bit stuck if you don't have any loose change on you to repair the negative balance.

Yeah, but it doesn't tell you which ticket you've capped at. It doesn't tell you in black and white, no, but it's fairly easy to work out which cap you've reached by checking which of the zones you've travelled through.

I have just worked this out using the TfL fare finder...
U16s get a 50p flat fare through zones 1-6 but not A-D... I didn't know this, it's great!
do ours get capped if I get to the U16 travelcard rate?

the 2nd and 3rd Generation gates tell you how much prepay you have on the card on the little POD... If you incur a neggi balance, it will let you out, but you will have to rectify this by adding cash to it, before you'll be allowed back in. It's a pity that you can't get the machines to print off a history of your journey; you presently have to go to the window to get this...
