I understand that all the PMs have had there rolls removed and a electronic replacement has taken their place.

If it is the same project we had done at Tubeline sites the actual machines (not the circuitly) were replaced by PLC's which simulated the machine with electronic versions of the timetable and can be loaded remotely. As far as the signalman are concerned they are normal machines and work and behave like a normal machine. There was another version done at West Kensington where orignally there was S1 & S2 now there is S3 (works lillie bridge depot) which actually replaces the Lever Op board. You still get the same problem of dropped numbers every now and again but no where near the amount before. Its very simple touch screen design where you can step or rewind the machine or load timetables up via a USB pen drive.

I thought on the Picc there was a train following system but on the Northern I am not aware of anything similar although what you say sounds just the same.

the train following system is completley different and was to replace the problems with the train describer equipment. The programme machine replacement project was just what it says replaces the machines nothing more. All the old equipment storage units, drive units etc are still in working order and are still needed to operate the machines even though the physical machine is redundant
