Doesn't appear as if they are selling the one's that need cleaning at the lower price anymore. That's the one I got and with a good clean looks as good as new!

My large'un in uncleaned state was £125. I collected it in person from the Museum shop,if that makes a difference. It's now in my hallway doing a good job of keeping motorcycle helmets tidily out of the way.

£125 pounds?! Thats still a months worth of groceries! One wonders what the scrap value per tonne of the rest of the train was! In fact if the total contract value is available somewhere this could probably be worked out... Thanks for the tip. I'l just cross my fingers and hope that in enough time storing them becomes such a burdon that they end up going for whatever anyones willing to pay!

Its a shame that a lot of the carriages were scrapped. I bet that there are some rich people out there who would convert one into some sort of office/leisure space in their back garden. I emailed the scrap company about purchasing a complete door but got no response back and that was months ago

I've got my small one which I got for £60 at Acton using my mates staff discount screwed into the wall above my bed where I store backpack just like it did when I went out on the trains and my jumper/coat hanging on the hook.

There must be an aluminium scrap value calculator on the internet somewhere, where you type in the weight of your aluminium and matches it with the current price

Trading price of aluminium on the London Metal Exchange is ~ 1220 GBP per metric ton.
Scrap value depends on the 'grade' of the metal. I'm no scrap metal dealer but I would guess the price would be around 50-75% of the LME price.

...but to assess railway memorabilia (or any antique, for that matter) purely in terms of its scrap value is a very crude reckoning (it can be regarded as the MINIMUM price). When they first came out at £250 I went Ouch, then "I'm not paying that....£100 more likely" Then when they were offered at £125,the extra £25 seemed a reasonable stretch. For instance, see how much BR Enamel station name totems in regional colours are going for these days....I should've had one when they were £30-£40 when I had the chance....

Yes absolutely, but the difference in price was what I was getting at!
The large ones weigh 3.267kg, and if the price of aluminium is £1,220/tonne, that makes each worth £3.99. Anything over that is the premium attached to sentimentality (I'm ignoring 'refurbishment' costs and shipping here!)
So, for every large one you buy, 98.4% of what you pay isn't for the luggage rack....
The weights of A stock carriages are known, as are the weight and price of the racks. Now if the scrap value of the rest of the train could be sought, one could work out how many luggage racks are worth a carriage, or how much less a carriage is worth per weight than a luggage rack from it. Or even how much less a luggage rack would have been worth to Booths than Jo Public...

They look nice, but I would say that they look like something in a primary school! Couldn't they have had "untreated" for the Jubilee line option?

I've just had that email too. I think they look quite funky though does it destroy the heritage from where they came? Is it also an indication that the original lot failed to sell in the numbers that they expected?

I've been getting e-mail about these for a little while now. I just think they look a little bit pants. Mine just blends nicely into my hallway and just seems natural; a coloured one would just look wrong.

Gosh. You'd have to have a pretty extreme coloured hallway for any of those to fit in. Though it often seems like the LTM shop is a license to print money so I'm sure they will sell.

Pff. Further proof that they simply don't know what they are doing and are more willing to spend further money to sort out lower than expected sales than just admitt that they were GREEDY with the initial prices they were charging.
This whole debacle is simply two fingers up to enthusiasts, and I'm sorry for the rhetoric, but its disgusting. Its already been stated that thousands[/u] of these were made originally, the capital costs being paid off decades ago. If they can't make a big enough profit selling them on in the condition they were removed in, then don't try to claim some kind of preservationist integrity. It is simply absurd that if one wishes to buy a large luggage rack in WATERLOO AND CITY colour ones tastes are catered for at the recession busting price of £250.00, yet if one just wants a plain, non disturbed, as-scrapped souvineer, without any after-polishing or additional servicing, you don't get a see in.
It is quite apparent that the fiscal issue rumours that were going around last year are the least of LTMs problems; moral bankrupcy is a far more terminal affliction.
